Conserving Our Environment

Subtopic: Water Conservation

Subject: Agriculture • For learners in Kenya (age 10)

What is water conservation?

Water conservation means saving water so there is enough for farms, people, and nature. In Kenya we need to save water for crops during dry months and for our animals and families.

Why water is important for farming

  • Plants need water to grow and give food.
  • Animals need clean water to drink.
  • Water keeps the soil healthy.
  • Kenya has rainy seasons (long rains March–May, short rains Oct–Dec). We must save water for dry times.

Where do farms get water?

Rain
Collected on roofs or fills rivers and dams.
Rivers, dams and water pans
Surface water used for irrigation.
Boreholes and wells
Water from underground.

Ways farmers and families can save water

1. Rainwater harvesting
Collect rain from roofs into tanks or barrels. Use it for watering gardens and animals.
2. Drip irrigation
Give water slowly to the plant roots. This saves water and helps crops grow better.
3. Mulching
Cover soil with dry leaves, grass or straw. Mulch keeps soil moist and stops water from evaporating.
4. Terraces and zai pits
Make small pits (zai) or terraces to catch and hold rain water. This helps crops in dry areas.
5. Fix leaks and save greywater
Fix broken taps, buckets and pipes. Use leftover bath or dish water (greywater) to water trees (not for drinking).

What you can do at school or at home

  • Close taps tightly after use. Tell an adult about leaks.
  • Help collect rainwater with a barrel or small bucket for the school garden.
  • Put mulch around plants in your home garden or school farm.
  • Water seedlings early morning or late evening when it is cool.
  • Join or start a tree-planting day to increase shade and retain soil moisture.

Quick activity: Make a simple rain collector

  1. Ask an adult for an empty clean plastic barrel or jerrycan.
  2. Place it under a roof downpipe or put a clean sheet on the roof edge to direct rain into it.
  3. Cover the top with mesh or a lid with holes to stop mosquitoes and leaves.
  4. Use collected water to water the school garden or trees.

Short quiz (answers below)

  1. When is a good time to water plants to save water?
  2. Name two ways to keep soil moist.
  3. What can you do if you see a leaking tap at home?
Answers:
  1. Early morning or late evening.
  2. Mulching and rainwater harvesting (or drip irrigation).
  3. Tell an adult and help fix it or turn it off to stop waste.
Remember: Save water today so our farms, families and wildlife have water tomorrow!
