What are indigenous foodcrops?

Indigenous foodcrops are plants that have been grown for a long time in Kenya. They like our climate and can be eaten by people and animals. They include:

  • Millets and sorghum 🌾 β€” good in dry places.
  • Cassava (muhogo) 🍠 β€” grows even when rain is little.
  • Sweet potato (viazi vitamu) 🍠 β€” tasty leaves and roots.
  • Amaranth (terere) and African nightshade (managu) πŸ₯¬ β€” healthy leafy vegetables.
  • Cowpea leaves (kunde) and other local greens 🌿.
(Local names can change with region and language.)

Why grow them in your garden?

  • They need less water and survive dry times 🌞.
  • They give healthy food for your family β€” vitamins and energy πŸ₯—.
  • They keep our farming traditions and special seeds safe 🌱.
  • They help soil stay healthy and reduce pests when mixed with other crops 🐞.

Simple gardening steps (for kids with an adult)

  1. Choose a spot: Sunny place, with some shade at midday. Keep near a water source.
  2. Prepare the soil: Remove weeds. Loosen soil with a fork or hoe. Mix in compost if you have it.
  3. Plant seeds or cuttings: Plant seeds at the depth shown on the packet. For cassava, plant stem cuttings.
  4. Water gently: Water after planting. Young plants need water to grow, but do not make puddles.
  5. Mulch: Put dried leaves or straw around plants to keep soil cool and wet.
  6. Weed and check: Pull weeds and look for pests often. Ask an adult for help with strong pests.
  7. Harvest: Pick leaves or roots when ready. Share with family!
Easy tips for Kenyan gardens
  • In dry areas, grow sorghum, millet and cassava β€” they need less rain.
  • Plant leafy vegetables like terere and managu during short rains for quick food.
  • Save seeds from healthy plants to plant next season β€” ask elders how to store them.
  • Use companion planting: grow legumes (beans) near maize to help soil with nitrogen.

Natural pest control (safe for kids)

  • Hand-pick big insects like caterpillars and drop them in soapy water πŸͺ£.
  • Use soap spray (adult help): mix a little soap with water to wash pests off leaves.
  • Encourage helpful insects: plant flowers to attract ladybirds and bees 🐞🐝.
Quick facts

β€’ Indigenous crops can give food even in dry years.
β€’ Leaves like managu have lots of vitamins A and C.
β€’ Root crops store energy for families.

Safety first

Always wash hands before touching food. Use adult help for tools. Don’t eat wild plants unless an adult says they are safe.

Fun activity (try at home or school)

Plant three seeds of an indigenous crop in a small pot. Each day, draw the plant and write one thing you see (height, leaves, insects). After harvest, share one dish with your family and tell them what you learned.

🌱 Grow local. Eat healthy. Save seeds. 🌽
