Grade 5 Agriculture Gardening Practices β Sowing Seeds On A Nursery Bed Notes
Sowing Seeds on a Nursery Bed
Topic: Gardening Practices | Subject: Agriculture
For: Kenyan learners (age 10)
What is a nursery bed?
A nursery bed is a small, safe place where we start seeds until they become tiny plants (seedlings). Then we move the seedlings to the main garden.
Why use a nursery bed?
- Keeps seeds safe from heavy rain and birds.
- Helps seedlings grow strong before moving them.
- Makes it easier to look after young plants.
Materials you need
- Seeds (eg. sukuma wiki/kale, tomatoes, spinach, carrots, onions)
- Good soil (topsoil mixed with compost) π±
- Watering can or small bucket π§
- Small hoe or stick for making lines (ask an adult for tools) π¨
- Shade cloth or banana leaves (optional) for too much sun βοΈ
Make your nursery bed (simple size for children)
A good size is about 1 m long and 0.5 m wide (about 3 ft Γ 1.5 ft). This is easy to look after.
Steps to sow seeds
- Clear the bed of weeds and stones.
- Loosen the soil with a fork or hand to about 10β15 cm deep.
- Mix compost with the soil so it is rich and dark.
- Make shallow lines (furrows) about 1β2 cm deep for small seeds. For bigger seeds (like beans), make holes 2β3 cm deep.
- Put seeds in the lines at the right spacing (small seeds close, larger seeds further apart).
- Cover lightly with soil and press gently so seeds touch the soil.
- Water gently with a watering can until soil is moist (not flooded).
Easy planting rule: small seeds = very shallow cover; big seeds = deeper cover. πΎπ±
Care for the nursery bed
- Keep soil moist. Water once or twice a day in the dry season or when the top soil looks dry.
- Shade seedlings from very strong sun using shade cloth or banana leaves for a few days.
- Remove weeds gently so they do not take food from your seedlings.
- Thin seedlings: when many seeds sprout, pull out the weaker ones so strong plants can grow. Leave the best seedlings about 5β10 cm apart (depends on crop).
When to move seedlings (transplant)
Move seedlings when they have 2β4 true leaves and look healthy. This can be 2β6 weeks after sowing depending on the crop. Do this on a cool, cloudy day or in the evening.
Tips for Kenyan gardeners (kids)
- Use locally available compost and ash to help the soil.
- Sow at the start of the rainy season for easy watering (short rains: OctβDec; long rains: MarβMay in many places). Ask a parent about your area.
- Grow vegetables you like to eat: sukuma wiki, spinach, tomatoes, and onions are good for school gardens.
- Always ask an adult to help with tools and moving seedlings.
Safety and chores
- Wash hands after gardening.
- Wear shoes when digging to protect your feet.
- Keep sharp tools away from little children.

Quick reminder: Plant seeds carefully, keep them moist, look after the nursery bed, and transplant when seedlings are strong.
Have fun growing your plants! Ask your teacher or a family member if you are not sure about anything. π
