Introduction

Prayers on special occasions are voluntary acts of worship asked for by the community or an individual to seek Allah’s help. Two important special prayers are: Swalatul Istisqaa (Prayer for rain) 🌧️ and Swalatul Istikhara (Prayer for guidance) ❓. In Kenya, communities may perform Istisqaa during drought and Istikhara when making important life decisions (choosing a school, accepting a job, marriage proposals).

Definitions

  • Istisqaa: A special congregational prayer asking Allah for rain and mercy.
  • Istikhara: A short prayer and supplication asking Allah to guide someone to what is best.

Swalatul Istisqaa (Prayer for Rain) 🌧️

Purpose: To humbly request Allah (S.W.T.) to send beneficial rain and to ask forgiveness and mercy for the community.

When to perform: When there is drought, prolonged lack of rain, or community need. Usually done in an open place (a ground, field or large compound).

Recommended manners before and during Istisqaa:

  • Repent sincerely and ask forgiveness (Tawbah).
  • Give charity (Sadaqah) and do good deeds.
  • Wear simple, clean clothes; perform ghusl if possible.
  • Go to an open space, pray in congregation facing the qibla.
Step-by-step performance (simple checklist)
  1. Make niyyah (intention) for Istisqaa.
  2. Form congregation and perform two rak'ahs of prayer (like two voluntary rak'ahs). Imam leads.
  3. After prayer, the imam gives a short reminder (khutbah) and then leads a long du'a asking for rain — everyone makes du'a and cries to Allah sincerely.
  4. Supplicate for forgiveness, mercy, and the safety of people and livestock.
  5. Continue to give charity and act righteously; rain may come soon or after some time according to Allah’s will.
Suggested Du'a for Istisqaa (simple, age-appropriate)

Arabic (short): اللَّهُمَّ اسْقِنَا غَيْثًا مُغِيثًا نَافِعًا

Transliteration: Allahumma usqinaa ghaythan mugheethan naafi'an

English: O Allah, give us rain — a life-giving and beneficial rain.

Class Activity (Kenyan context)

Role-play: In groups, students act as imam and community members performing Istisqaa in a school compound. Discuss what other good deeds the community can do during drought (charity, water-saving, helping neighbours).

Swalatul Istikhara (Prayer for Guidance) ❓

Purpose: To ask Allah to guide a person to the best choice when facing a decision (school choices, exams, marriage, relocation, job offers).

When to perform: Before making an important decision. It is a Sunnah recommended for all Muslims.

Step-by-step performance
  1. Perform wudu (ablution) and make niyyah for two voluntary rak'ahs of prayer for Istikhara.
  2. Pray two rak'ahs normally (you may recite short Surahs).
  3. After finishing the prayer, recite the Du'a of Istikhara (see below) sincerely.
  4. Move forward with the choice if you feel ease; if you face difficulties and obstacles, consider postponing or choosing otherwise — and repeat Istikhara if unsure.
Du'a of Istikhara (from the Prophet ﷺ)

Transliteration (beginning): Allahumma inni astakhiruka bi 'ilmika, wa astaqdiruka bi qudratika, wa as'aluka min fadlika...

English (short meaning): O Allah, I ask You by Your knowledge and seek power by Your might and ask You from Your great favour. You know, I do not know; You are the Knower of unseen things...

(Complete text is taught in class from the hadith; teacher provides full Arabic + translation.)

How to interpret Istikhara
  • There is no guaranteed dream or sign — guidance often comes as a feeling of ease or difficulty about a choice, signs from events, or clear advice from scholars/parents.
  • Repeat Istikhara if still unsure. Consult parents, teachers, and learned people and use common sense.
  • Trust Allah’s wisdom and accept the outcome with patience.
Class Activity

Students write a short scenario (e.g., choosing a secondary school, accepting a scholarship) and practice performing Istikhara (two rak'ahs + du'a). Then discuss what signs or feelings could guide them.

Significance of These Prayers

  • Show humility and dependence on Allah (Tawakkul).
  • Bring the community together in times of need (Istisqaa).
  • Help individuals seek Allah’s guidance and peace of mind when making choices (Istikhara).
  • Encourage moral reform: repentance, charity and good deeds often accompany these prayers.

Quick Performance Checklists & Common Mistakes

Istisqaa Checklist
  • Intention for prayer & community need
  • Two rak'ahs (imam leads)
  • Khutbah and long du'a for rain
  • Repentance, charity and good deeds
Istikhara Checklist
  • Wudu and intention
  • Two voluntary rak'ahs
  • Recite Du'a of Istikhara sincerely
  • Look for ease/difficulty and consult others
Common mistakes to avoid
  • Seeing these prayers as magic — they are worship, not guaranteed commands for immediate results.
  • Ignoring repentance and good deeds when asking from Allah — sincere change of heart matters.
  • Not consulting parents or elders after Istikhara — guidance includes wise counsel.

Assessment Tasks (for learners)

  1. Explain in your own words how to perform Swalatul Istisqaa and why the community prays for rain. (SLO a & b)
  2. Demonstrate (role-play) the steps of Istikhara in pairs: two rak'ahs and recite the Du'a of Istikhara. Teacher observes and marks correctness. (SLO c)
  3. Write a short reflection (150–200 words) on how performing these prayers helps you fulfil Allah’s commands and improve your character. (SLO d & e)
  4. Group discussion: Assess the importance of charity and repentance in success of community prayers. (SLO b)

Homework & Resources

  • Homework: Memorise the short Istisqaa du'a and the beginning lines of the Istikhara du'a. Write one paragraph describing when you would use Istikhara.
  • Recommended resources: Teacher’s handout with full Arabic texts, local imam for practical demonstration, class visits to the prayer ground for safe role-play.

Final note: These prayers connect the believer to Allah and to the community. They should be performed sincerely, with repentance, charity and good conduct. Encourage asking elders, scholars and parents when unsure.
