Guided Writing: Poetry — Arabic (Food & Drinks)

Age: 13 — Kenya. Focus: Arabic grammar needed to write a short poem about food and drinks. Follow the learning outcomes:

  • Construct correct Arabic sentences.
  • Use basic descriptive words (adjectives) correctly in a poem.
  • Appreciate clear writing for communication (grammatical accuracy).

Key grammatical points (simple and practical)

  1. Noun — Adjective order:
In Arabic, the adjective comes after the noun and must agree in gender and definiteness. Examples:
    • تفاحة حمراء — tuffāḥah ḥamrāʼ (an apple red) (indefinite)
    • التفاحة الحمراء — al-tuffāḥah al-ḥamrāʼ (the red apple) (both definite)
  2. Nominal and verbal sentences:
    - Nominal sentence (جملة اسمية): starts with a noun/pronoun — useful for short poem lines. Example (nominal):
    الشاي ساخن
    - Verbal sentence (جملة فعلية): starts with a verb — shows action. Example (verbal):
    شربتُ الشاي
  3. Definite article and agreement:
If the noun has الـ (al-), the adjective usually also takes الـ. Example:
    الخبز طازج — الخبز الطازج
(Use the pattern that keeps both noun and adjective definite or both indefinite.)
  4. Simple verbs useful for food/drink:
    أكلتُ (I ate) • أكلَ (he ate) • شربتُ (I drank) • أحبُّ (I like) • أُحِبُّ الشايَ

How to build a short poem (grammar rules to follow)

  • Use short lines (1–6 words) — choose either nominal or verbal sentences for each line.
  • Place adjectives after nouns and make sure they match in gender/definiteness.
  • Keep verb forms correct for the subject (أنا أكلتُ, هو أكلَ).
  • Repeat a descriptive word (e.g., لذيذ) to create rhythm and rhyme safely.

Example short poem (4 lines) — correct grammar

الفطور لذيذ
الشاي ساخن
تفاحة حمراء
والقلب فرحان
Notes: each line is short. Adjectives (لذيذ، ساخن، حمراء) follow the nouns and agree (التفاحة — حمراء).

Guided practice — write your poem

  1. Fill the blanks to make a 4-line poem. Use words from the vocabulary above and check noun-adjective order.
    1) ______ _______
    2) ______ _______
    3) ______ _______
    4) ______ _______
(Tip: try one line verbal: شربتُ _______)
  2. Create a line using a verb: write one line that begins with a verb meaning "I ate" or "I drank". Example:
    أكلتُ التفاحة
  3. Check your poem with this checklist:
    • Are adjectives after nouns?
    • Do adjectives match gender (m/f) of the noun?
    • If you used الـ, is the adjective also definite?

Model answers / ideas

Example filled poem:
1) الفطور لذيذ
2) الشاي ساخن
3) التفاحة حمراء
4) ثم شربتُ العصير

Short activity for class or home:

  • Write two versions of line 4 using different adjectives (مثلاً: فرحان، سعيد، لذيذ).
  • Swap a noun (e.g., change التفاحة to الخبز) and adjust the adjective to agree.
Final tip: keep lines short and check agreement (noun → adjective). This helps the poem sound clear and makes communication effective.
