GRADE 8 Arabic MY SURROUNDING- Listening and Speaking – Imitative Speaking (2 Sessions) Notes
Arabic — MY SURROUNDING: Imitative Speaking (2 Sessions)
Age: 13 (Kenya) — Subtopic: Imitative Speaking (2 sessions) — Focus: grammatical forms used when responding to instructions, describing places, and expressing appreciation.
Specific learning outcomes
- Respond to instructions appropriately using imperative and short replies (e.g., حاضر، سأذهب).
- Present an oral description of a place in the surrounding using demonstratives, prepositions of place, adjectives and agreement.
- Express appreciation of places using verbs and structure (e.g., أحبّ، يعجبني) with correct grammar.
Grammar focus (overview)
Key grammatical items to practise during imitative speaking:
- Imperative (الأمر): Form and use to give/obey instructions (e.g., اِذْهَبْ – "Go", ادخل، انظر). Negative imperative: لا + present (لا تذهب).
- Short replies & responsiveness: حاضر (Okay), نعم (Yes), لا (No), سأفعل / سأذهب (I will do/go), تمّ (Done).
- Prepositions of place: في، على، أمام، خلف، بجانب، بين (in, on, in front of, behind, beside, between).
- Demonstratives & articles: هذا/هذه (this masc./fem.), هُناك / هنا (there/here), definite article الـ and assimilation with sun-letters (e.g., الشَّجَرَة pronounced ash-shajara).
- Adjectives & agreement: Adjective agrees in gender & number: بستان جميل (masc), حديقة جميلة (fem). Use plural forms or جمع when needed.
- Expressing liking/appreciation: أحبّ + noun (I like), يعجبني + noun (It pleases me / I like it). Use pronoun suffixes: يعجبني المسجد (I like the mosque).
- Pronunciation points: long vowels (ا، و، ي), shadda (gemination), and distinct sounds ح / ه / ع for clear imitation.
Session 1 — Responding to instructions (45 minutes)
Aim: Practice the imperative, negative imperative, and short replies through imitation drills.
Warm-up (5 min)
Teacher says simple commands related to the school/local environment; learners repeat (imitative). Use clear pronunciation and rhythm.
Teaching points (10 min)
- Forming the imperative: remove present prefix and (often) vowel pattern changes. Examples:
- يذهب → اِذْهَبْ (go!)
- يدخل → ادْخُلْ (enter!)
- ينظر → انْظُرْ (look!)
- Negative: لا + present: لا تذهب (don't go).
- Short replies: حاضر (I will), سأذهب (I will go), نعم / لا.
Imitative drills (15 min)
- Teacher: "اِذْهَبْ إلى المدرسة." (Izhab ila al-madrasah) — Learners repeat chorally, then individually.
- Teacher: "ادْخُلِ الحديقة." (Udkhul al-hadeeqah) — Repeat; then students respond "حاضر" or "سأدخل الآن".
- Negative drill: "لا تَرْكَبِ الدراجة هنا." — Repeat and respond "حسنا، لا".
Controlled practice (10 min)
In pairs: A gives instruction (use given verbs), B repeats then answers with a short reply (حاضر / سأفعل / لا). Swap roles.
Mini-assessment (5 min)
Teacher gives 4 commands randomly; each student must repeat and give an appropriate short reply. Mark correct imperative pronunciation and appropriate reply.
Session 2 — Describing places & expressing appreciation (45 minutes)
Aim: Use demonstratives, prepositions, adjectives (with agreement), and verbs of liking to give oral descriptions and express appreciation.
Teaching points (12 min)
- Structure for a short oral description:
- Opening: هذا المكان هو... / هذه هي... (This place is...)
- Location: يقع في / أمام / بجانب / خلف (It is located in / in front of / beside / behind)
- Characteristics: صغير/كبير، جميل/قبيح، نظيف، واسع (Size/quality/adjectives)
- Use of liking verbs: أحبُّ هذا المكان / يعجبني هذا المكان لأن... (I like this place because...)
- Adjective agreement: adjective matches noun gender and definiteness.
- حديقة جميلة (garden — feminine noun + feminine adjective)
- بستان كبير (orchard — masculine noun + masculine adjective)
- Demonstratives: هذا (masc this), هذه (fem this), هُناك / هنا (there/here).
Model descriptions (with transliteration & translation)
1) هذه الحديقة جميلة. تقع بجانب المدرسة. فيها أشجار كبيرة ومقاعد للجلوس. أحبّ هذه الحديقة لأنها هادئة.
Transliteration: Hadhihi al-hadeeqah jameelah. Taqa'u bijanib al-madrasah. feeha ashjaar kabeerah wa maqaa'id lil-juloos. Uhibbu hadhihi al-hadeeqah li'annaha hadiah.
Translation: This garden is beautiful. It is next to the school. It has big trees and benches to sit. I like this garden because it is quiet.
2) هذا السوق قريب من بيتنا. فيه بائعون يبيعون فواكه وخضروات طازجة. يعجبني السوق لأنه عملي ورخيص.
Transliteration: Hatha al-souq qareeb min baytina. Feeh baai'oon yabee'oon fawakeh wa khodrawat tazajah. Yu'jibuni al-souq li'annahu 'amaliyy wa rakhees.
Translation: This market is near our home. It has sellers selling fresh fruits and vegetables. I like the market because it is practical and cheap.
Imitative practice (15 min)
- Teacher reads model description slowly; learners repeat sentence-by-sentence focusing on pronunciation, adjective agreement and prepositions.
- Call-and-response: teacher says phrase, learners repeat louder and then softer to practise intonation.
- Swap: learners imitate teacher's model then teachers give corrective feedback on agreement (fem/masc) and preposition use.
Production & assessment (8 min)
Each learner gives a short (3–4 sentence) oral description of a nearby place (school, mosque, market, farm, river) using:
- a demonstrative (هذا/هذه), a preposition of place, one adjective (correct gender), and one sentence expressing liking (أحبّ / يعجبني).
Assessment checklist (oral): correct imperative/responding (session 1), correct demonstrative and preposition, adjective agreement, clear expression of liking. Mark 1–3 per item.
Examples & handy phrases (for imitation)
Imperatives / Instructions
- اِذْهَبْ إلى المكتبة. (Izhab ila al-maktabah) — Go to the library.

Describing / Appreciating
- هذا المكان واسع ونظيف. (Hatha al-makan waasi' wa nadhif) — This place is spacious and clean.
- أُحِبُّ هذا البيت لأنه جميل. (Uhibbu hatha al-bayt li'annahu jameel) — I like this house because it is beautiful.
- يعجبني المسجد لأنه هادئ ومريح. (Yu'jibuni al-masjid li'annahu haadi' wa murih) — I like the mosque because it is calm and comfortable.
Teaching tips (classroom & Kenyan context)
- Use familiar places: school, market, mosque, church, farm, river, playground — learners relate better and imitate naturally.
- Model pronunciation often and encourage repetition (choral → small groups → individual).
- Correct gently: focus on one grammar point per drill (e.g., adjective agreement), not everything at once.
- Use gesture & pointing when practising demonstratives and prepositions (this, there, next to, behind).
Simple visual: 🌳 🏫 🛒 🕌 — use these as cue-cards when asking learners to describe each place in Arabic.
