Grade 1 Music – Aspects Of Singing Games Notes
Aspects of Singing Games
Singing games are songs you sing while you play. They are fun for children in Kenya and everywhere! They help you move, listen and sing together. 😊
Main aspects (simple)
- Melody (Tune) — the song you sing. It can be high or low. Try singing loud and soft.
- Rhythm / Beat — the steady pulse. You can clap or tap your feet to the beat.
- Words / Lyrics — the short words you repeat. Use simple words in English or Swahili like "hello" / "jambo".
- Actions / Movements — steps, claps, turns, or jumping while singing.
- Roles — leader who sings a line, others repeat (call and response).
- Joining In — children take turns or sing together as a group.
How to play (easy)
- Stand in a circle or a line. Hold hands or leave space to move.
- Teacher or child leads a short line (call).
- Everyone repeats the line (response) and does an action (clap, step, turn).
- Repeat the lines and actions until everyone is smiling!
Kenyan touch — simple examples
Use Swahili or English words you know. You can use small drums, shakers, or clapping for rhythm.
Example 1 — Call and response (Swahili)
Leader: "Jambo, jambo!" 👋
Everyone: "Jambo!" (wave hands)
Example 2 — Action song (English)
Sing and do actions: "Clap clap, turn around" 👏🔄
Everyone claps twice, then turns once.
Simple activities to try
- Clap the beat: teacher claps, children follow.
- March on the spot to the rhythm.
- Circle singing: one child in the centre does an action, others sing.
- Use a small drum or shaker to keep time.
Safety and teacher tips
- Play in a safe space with no sharp objects.
- Wear shoes or barefoot on soft ground.
- Let shy children listen first; then they can join.
- Keep songs short and repeat so everyone remembers.
Questions to ask the children
- Can you clap with the beat? 👏
- Can you sing the words and do the action? 🎶
- Who wants to be the leader next? ✋
Have fun singing and playing! Sing in Swahili, English or both — and make happy music together. 🌟
