Short note for learners (age 6)
Today we use our bodies to show song feelings. We will learn simple dances from Kenya and move to the beat. Dance safely, listen and have fun! 💃🕺
Specific Learning Outcomes
  1. Move the body to a steady beat (walk, clap or tap to the song).
  2. Perform one or two simple dance steps (step-touch, sway, gentle jump).
  3. Copy a teacher or friend and follow leader actions.
  4. Use hands, feet and face to show happy, sad or excited feelings in a song.
  5. Show respect for Kenyan dance traditions by listening, sharing space and trying local steps.
Suggested Learning Experiences
1. Warm-up: Body and voice wake-up (5 minutes)
Sing a short Kenyan greeting song (e.g., "Jambo") or hum. Do easy stretches: reach up, touch toes, shake hands and feet. Count 1-8 while marching on the spot to a slow beat. 🎶
2. Keep the beat: Clap and stamp (7–10 minutes)
Teacher plays a simple Kenyan song or taps a drum (ngoma). Children clap on the beat (1,2,3,4) and then stamp gently with feet. Change speed: slow then fast. Use a shaker (bottle with beans) for fun.
3. Follow the leader: Copy simple steps (10 minutes)
Teacher shows a 4-step pattern: step-right, step-left, sway, clap. Children copy. Let one child be leader so others follow. Use simple Swahili cues: "Kulia" (right), "Kushoto" (left), "Piga makofi" (clap).
4. Circle dance (15 minutes)
Children hold hands or pretend-hold at arm's length and walk in a circle to a Kenyan children's song. Add a repeated action every 4 beats: stamp, turn, clap. Example songs: a local children’s rhyme or "Jambo Bwana" (use teacher's judgment).
5. Explore local dance steps (10 minutes)
Introduce a very small part of a Kenyan traditional dance (e.g., gentle jump like Maasai Adumu or simple hand patterns from Luo Isukuti). Teach one short, safe move and practise slowly. Emphasize respect and cultural pride.
6. Cool down and reflection (5 minutes)
Slow breathing, stretch arms, sit in a circle. Ask simple questions: "How did the dance make you feel?" Let two children share. Praise everyone for trying. ✨
Materials
  • Space to move safely (classroom yard).
  • Simple instruments: drum (ngoma), shaker, bell or clapping.
  • Scarves or bright cloth pieces.
Safety and inclusion
  • Keep enough space between children.
  • Ask about injuries or limits; give quieter roles if needed.
  • Respect cultural differences; celebrate every child’s effort.
Assessment (how teacher checks learning)
Observe and tick: child can keep a steady beat, copy two steps, show an expressive face (happy/sad), and follow the leader. Use a short checklist or quick photo/video (with permission) to record progress.
Note: Choose songs and dance moves suitable for young children and local customs. Encourage joy, safety and respect for Kenyan musical traditions.
