Role of Music

Subject: Music โ€” Subtopic: Role of music in daily life (Kenya) โ€” Age: 6
What is music?

Music is singing, clapping, drumming and dancing. We hear music at home, at school and at church or mosque. ๐ŸŽต

How music helps us every day
  • Wake up happy: A song can help us start the day. โ˜€๏ธ
  • Learn things: Songs help us remember letters, numbers and names. ๐Ÿง
  • Work and chores: Singing makes work like sweeping or fetching water fun. ๐Ÿงน๐Ÿ’ง
  • Prayers and quiet time: Hymns and songs are part of church, mosque and family prayers. ๐Ÿ™
  • Celebrations: We sing at birthdays, weddings and holidays like Jamhuri Day. ๐ŸŽ‚๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ช
  • Sleep and comfort: Lullabies help babies and children sleep. ๐ŸŒ™๐Ÿ›Œ
  • Keep culture: Kenyan people sing traditional songs that tell stories. ๐Ÿฅ
  • Feelings: Music can make us happy, calm, or ready to dance. ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ’ƒ
Music in Kenya

Kenya has many kinds of songs. We sing the national anthem at school. We also have folk songs and dances from different communities (for example, Maasai, Kikuyu, Luo and more). Drums, clapping and singing are important. ๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿฅ

Try these activities
  1. Sing a wake-up song tomorrow morning. Say the name of the day (e.g., "Hello Monday!"). โ˜€๏ธ
  2. Clap a rhythm: clap, clap, pause โ€” then repeat. Ask a friend to copy you. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘โ–ช
  3. Make a simple drum from a tin or plastic container. Tap it with hands to a beat. ๐Ÿฅ
  4. Sing a short song about breakfast (see the example below). ๐Ÿž
Short song (easy)

Tune: (sing slowly)

Good morning sun, good morning light โ˜€๏ธ
We clap and sing with all our might ๐Ÿ‘
Eat your food, then run and play ๐Ÿฝ๏ธ๐Ÿƒ
Sing with friends all through the day! ๐ŸŽต
Tips for teachers and parents
  • Use short songs in English or Swahili. Children learn fast with the words repeated. (e.g., "Jambo" or "Twende").
  • Encourage children to make sounds with their bodies: stamps, claps, snaps.
  • Let children share songs from their homes and communities.
