Wind Instruments

Vifaa vya Upepo — Music for children (Kenya), Age 6
What are wind instruments?

Wind instruments make sound when you blow air into them. The air moves and makes notes. We use our mouth and fingers to change the sound.

Easy examples
🎵 Recorder / Rekoda
Small flute used in schools. Blow softly and cover holes with fingers to change notes.
🎺 Trumpet / Trombizi
A metal horn. Players press buttons and blow to make bright sounds.
🎶 Flute / Filimbi
A long thin tube. Hold it sideways and blow across the hole for soft sounds.
🎷 Saxophone / Saksofani
A warm-sounding horn with keys. Blow into the mouthpiece and press keys to play tunes.
How to play (simple steps)
  1. Sit or stand up straight. Good posture makes nice sounds.
  2. Take a small breath in through your nose.
  3. Blow gently into the instrument. Try not to blow too hard.
  4. Use your fingers to cover holes or press keys to change notes.
Care and safety
  • Wipe the mouthpiece with a clean cloth after use.
  • Do not share mouthpieces with friends — it is more hygienic to use your own.
  • Keep instruments safe in their case when you are not using them.
  • Be gentle — instruments can break if dropped.
Fun classroom activities
  1. Listening game: Teacher plays a sound (recorder, flute, trumpet). Children raise a hand when they hear the flute sound.
  2. Call and echo: Teacher plays a short tune. Children try to copy with a recorder or whistle.
  3. Draw and colour: Draw your favourite wind instrument and give it a name. (Use bright Kenyan colours: green, red, black, white!)
