What is rhythm?

Rhythm is the pattern of sounds that happen in time. It is like a heartbeat for a song — it tells us when to clap, step, or play a drum.

See and feel a beat

One simple 4-beat pattern
Red = clap or drum (strong beat). Yellow = quiet or short sound (soft beat).

Clap-along game

Teacher or parent: do the pattern slowly. Child: copy the pattern. Repeat 3 times.

Pattern 1:
👏 👏 ⏸️ 👏
(Clap, clap, pause, clap)
Pattern 2:
👏 ⏸️ 👏 👏
(Clap, rest, clap, clap)
Pattern 3:
👣 👣 👣 👣
(Stomp four steady beats)

Use Kenyan sounds

Try keeping the rhythm with things you have:

  • Clap hands (👏)
  • Stomp feet (👣)
  • Small drum or ngoma — hit gently or strongly
  • Shaker or bottle with stones (soft sound)
Tip: Use loud sounds for strong beats and quiet sounds for soft beats.

Make your own rhythm

  1. Choose 4 sounds (clap, stomp, drum, shake).
  2. Pick a pattern. Example: clap, clap, stomp, shake.
  3. Count 1–2–3–4 while you do it.
  4. Repeat and try faster or slower.
Try this challenge:
Make one pattern. Show a friend or family member. Can they copy it?

Easy rhythm signs

Long (hold)
Short
Rest (silence)

Activities for home or class

  • Call and response: adult claps a pattern, child copies.
  • Make a rhythm story: use sounds for walking, jumping, or eating.
  • Perform in a group: one child keeps the steady beat, others add patterns.
Note for teachers/parents: keep lessons short (5–10 minutes) and fun. Use familiar Kenyan sounds (ngoma, shakers, claps).
Have fun making rhythms! 🎶🇰🇪
