CRE β€” Creation: Origin & Consequences of Sin

Subject: CRE (Christian Religious Education) | Subtopic: Origin and Consequences of Sin
Target age: 13 (Kenya)

What is sin? πŸ€”

Sin means choosing to do what God has said not to do β€” disobeying God’s laws. It can be things we do (lying, stealing), things we fail to do (not helping someone), or selfish thoughts (hatred, envy).

Origin of sin (How sin started) πŸͺ΅πŸ
  • Garden of Eden (Genesis 3): Adam and Eve were given free choice. They disobeyed God when they ate the forbidden fruit after being tempted by the serpent.
  • Free will: God gave people the freedom to choose. Sin began when people used that freedom to turn away from God.
  • Temptation and influence: Temptation (like the serpent) and bad examples from others can lead people to sin.
  • Human weakness: We are not perfect, and often our desires push us to wrong choices.
Consequences of sin βœ–οΈ ➜ 🚫

Sin does not only affect one person β€” it brings results that touch families, schools and the whole community.

  • Separation from God: Sin breaks our close relationship with God. (Spiritual consequence)
  • Guilt and shame: People feel embarrassed or afraid after doing wrong.
  • Death & suffering: The Bible says sin brought death and suffering into the world (Genesis 3). Physical illnesses and pain became part of life.
  • Broken relationships: Sin causes fights, mistrust, and hate between family members, friends and communities.
  • Social effects: Crime, greed and injustice increase in society when people choose selfishness.
  • Bad habits & sinfulness: One sin can lead to many others β€” it becomes easier to keep choosing wrong.

How God responds and our hope ✝️
  • God’s justice and mercy: Sin needs to be dealt with, but God offers forgiveness when we repent.
  • Jesus and salvation: Christians believe Jesus died and rose again to remove sin’s power and restore our friendship with God.
  • Repentance: Saying sorry to God, turning away from sin and choosing to live rightly.
  • Good actions: Prayer, following God’s commands, helping others and being honest help heal the harm caused by sin.
Memory verse

Romans 3:23 β€” "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."

Class activities & questions (for group work)
  1. Role play: Act out the story of Adam and Eve, then discuss how each choice led to consequences.
  2. Examples: List three common sins at school (e.g., cheating, bullying, lying). For each, write one way to fix the harm caused.
  3. Reflection: Write a short prayer asking for forgiveness and strength to do what is right.
Teacher tip: Relate consequences to everyday life in Kenya β€” family respect, school discipline and caring for neighbors. Encourage students to speak openly and think about making better choices.
