Foods Etiquette ๐ฝ๏ธ
Subject: Hygiene and Nutrition โ Topic: Food
For Kenyan children (age 8) โ simple rules to eat politely and stay healthy.
1. What is food etiquette?
Food etiquette means the polite and clean ways we eat and share food. It helps us stay healthy and show respect to others at the table.
2. Before you eat โ clean hands ๐งผ
Always wash your hands with soap and water before eating. Do it for about 20 seconds (sing "Happy Birthday" twice).
3. Good table manners (Do these) โ
- Say a short prayer or "Asante" if that is your family's custom. ๐
- Sit properly at the table. Keep elbows off the table while eating. ๐ช
- Chew with your mouth closed and speak after you swallow. ๐
- Use a spoon or fork for soups and rice. Use your right hand for ugali and other foods if your family uses hands. ๐
- Take small bites so you can chew well. ๐ฅ
- Offer food to elders first and say thank you when served. ๐ต๐ด
4. Things to avoid (Don't) โ
- Don't talk with food in your mouth. ๐ค
- Don't play with your food or throw it. That wastes food. ๐ซ
- Don't use your left hand if your family prefers the right hand for eating. Use a clean right hand. โโก๏ธ๐๏ธ
- Don't share a spoon or cup without cleaning it first. ๐ฅ๐ฟ
- Don't put dirty hands in shared dishes. Use a serving spoon. ๐ฝ๏ธ

Many Kenyan meals (like ugali with sukuma wiki, chapati, or grilled nyama) are eaten with hands. Follow these steps:
- Wash your hands well first. ๐งผ
- Use only your right hand. Break a small piece of ugali or chapati. ๐
- Use the thumb and three fingers to shape the food into a bite. Keep fingers clean and do not lick them. ๐
- Bring food to your mouth gently and chew with your mouth closed. ๐
6. Food safety at home
- Cover food so flies cannot sit on it. ๐ชฐโก๏ธ๐ซ
- Keep food at the right temperature (hot food hot, cold food cold). ๐ฅโ๏ธ
- Wash fruits and vegetables before eating. ๐๐
- Keep your plate and eating area clean. Wipe spills quickly. ๐งฝ
7. After eating โ tidy up
Clear your plate, put leftovers in the kitchen, and wash your hands again. If you can, help wash dishes or dry them. This shows respect and keeps everyone healthy.

- It is okay to take food from a shared plate with dirty hands. (False)
