Cleaning the Classroom

Subject: Hygiene and Nutrition • Topic: Health Practices • For age: 8 years
Short goal: Learn how to keep our classroom clean and healthy. A clean room keeps us safe from germs and makes learning fun! 😀

Materials we use

  • 🧹 Broom and dustpan
  • 🧽 Damp cloth or sponge
  • 🗑️ Bin or bucket for rubbish
  • 🚰 Water, soap or a tippy tap (jerrycan hand-wash)
  • 🧴 Small hand sanitizer (teacher keeps it)
  • 🧤 Gloves for adults when using strong cleaning liquids (teacher only)

Why we clean the classroom

  • ✔️ Stops germs so we don't fall sick.
  • ✔️ Makes the room nice and bright for learning.
  • ✔️ Keeps books and uniform clean.
  • ✔️ Shows we care for our school and friends.

How to clean the classroom — easy steps

  1. 🕘 Start at the same time every day. After the last lesson or before break, gather your cleaning tools.
  2. 🧹 Sweep the floor. Push dust into a pile and use the dustpan. Sweep under desks and corners.
  3. 🧽 Wipe the tables and boards with a damp cloth. Use little water so books do not get wet.
  4. 🗑️ Empty the rubbish bin into the school bin or pit. If there is plastic, keep it for recycling.
  5. 🚪 Open windows to let fresh air in. Good air helps us stay healthy.
  6. 🚰 Wash your hands with soap after cleaning, or use the tippy tap.

Class cleaning routine (you can do this at school)

Make a weekly chart. Every day 2–4 pupils help. Change names each week.

  • 🧹 Sweeper(s) — sweep the floor
  • 🧽 Duster(s) — wipe desks and board
  • 🗑️ Bin monitor — empties the classroom bin
  • 🌿 Window/plant helper — opens windows and waters class plant

Safety tips

  • 🚫 Do not use strong chemicals alone (e.g., bleach/Jik). Teacher or an adult should help.
  • 🧤 Wear gloves if you touch wet rubbish—ask an adult first.
  • ⚠️ Be careful with broken glass or sharp items. Tell the teacher at once.

Notes for Kenyan schools

Many Kenyan schools use tippy taps (a jerrycan on a swung stick) for handwashing. This is good and saves water. If your school has a garden, put plant cuttings there after cleaning. Keep rubbish away from the classroom door and latrines.

Cleaning Song (short)

"Sweep, sweep, clean the floor, keep our classroom clean and more. Wipe the desk, wash your hands, happy and healthy in our land!" 🎶

Mini quiz (answer out loud in class)

  1. Why do we open windows when cleaning?
  2. Who should handle strong liquids like Jik?
  3. Name one job in the cleaning routine.

Teacher tip: Make cleaning a fun team task. Praise pupils who help. A happy, clean classroom helps everyone learn well.
