Subject: Hygiene and Nutrition • Topic: Personal Hygiene • Subtopic: Prevention of parasites in and out of the body
For: Kenyan children aged 8 — simple tips to keep you healthy and happy!
What are parasites?
Parasites are tiny animals that can live in our bodies (like worms) or on our bodies (like head lice). They make us sick, tired, or itchy. We can stop them with good habits.
Inside the body — stop worms
- Wash hands with soap and water before you eat and after using the toilet. 🧼💧
- Always use a clean toilet or latrine. Never open-defecate. 🚽
- Wear shoes outside — don’t walk barefoot, especially in soil. 👟
- Eat cooked food and wash fruits and vegetables with clean water. 🍎✔️
- Drink clean water from a safe source. If unsure, grown-ups should boil or treat it. 💧🔥
- Take deworming tablets when the teacher or health worker gives them at school or clinic. (They help kill worms.) 💊
Outside the body — stop lice, ticks and mosquito bites
- Do not share combs, hats, brushes, towels or pillows. Keep your things to yourself. 🎩✋
- Keep hair clean and check for lice — tell an adult if you are itchy. 🪮
- Wear long sleeves and trousers in tall grass. Check for ticks after playing outside. 🌿👀
- Use a treated mosquito net every night to stop malaria. Close windows early and remove standing water where mosquitoes breed. 🦟🛏️
- Keep your house and school clean and free from rubbish so bugs cannot hide. 🧹
Easy Handwashing Steps
- Wet hands with clean water. 💧
- Put soap and rub hands together well. 🧼
- Scrub for about 20 seconds — sing "Happy Birthday" twice. 🎶
- Rinse with clean water and dry with a clean towel. 🕊️
At school and at home — good rules
- Always wash hands before meals at school. 🏫
- Use school or community latrines properly. Keep them clean. 🚻
- If a friend has lice, tell a teacher so everyone can check and stay healthy. 🤝
- Join school deworming days — they help keep you strong for learning and play. 📚⚽
Quick Checklist — Am I doing these?

A little poem to remember
"Soap and water every day, keeps the sneaky worms away. Shoes on feet and nails kept neat — stay healthy, strong, and sweet!" 🎵
Remember: If you feel very sick, have a tummy ache that won't stop, a fever, or strong itching, tell your parent, teacher or go to the nearest health centre in Kenya. Health workers will help. 🏥
