Why keep food safe? β
- So food does not make us sick π€.
- So food stays fresh and tasty ππ₯¦.
- So we do not waste food or money πΈ.
Where to keep different foods
- Fridge (if you have one): milk (maziwa), meat (nyama), fish (samaki), cut fruits ππ§.
- Cool, dry cupboard: maize flour (unga), sugar, salt, rice, dry beans π.
- Vegetables and greens (sukuma wiki): keep in a cool place or in fridge to stay crisp π₯¬.
- Keep cooked food covered and in the fridge quickly (see rules below) π².
Good habits for storing food
- Wash your hands before touching food π§Όβ.
- Use clean containers and cover food with lids or cloth π§Ί.
- Keep food off the floorβuse shelves or tables πͺ΅β‘οΈπ¦.
- Close packets tightly. Use jars or plastic boxes for flour and sugar π.
- Label food with the date you cooked or opened it (write on masking tape) π·οΈ.
Signs a food is bad β throw it away! β
- Smells yucky or sour π« .
- Has mould (fuzzy green, white, or black) πβ‘οΈgreen fuzz.
- Looks different colour or has slime (especially meat or fish) ππ§.
- Flies or ants around opened food β seal it and check ππͺ°.
Cooked food safety (easy rules) π½οΈ
- Cool food a little and cover it. Do not leave hot food in the open all day βοΈβ‘οΈβ.
- Put food in the fridge within 2 hours if you can πβ‘οΈπ§.
- When reheating, make it hot until steaming β then it is safer to eat β¨οΈπ₯.
If the electricity goes off (load-shedding) β‘β
- Keep the fridge door closed as much as possible π§πͺ.
- If you have a cool box with ice or frozen water bottles, use it to keep milk and meat cool βοΈπ§.
- Eat things that can spoil first, like cooked food and milk π₯£π₯.
Pest proofing β keep mice and ants away ππ
- Store grains in strong plastic or metal containers with lids π.
- Keep the kitchen clean and sweep crumbs each day π§Ή.
- Check for holes in walls and ask an adult to fix them ποΈβ‘οΈπ§.
