Grade 7 German GETTING AROUND- Reading – Reading aloud Notes
GETTING AROUND – Reading aloud (German)
Age group: 12 (Kenya). Focus: grammatical features that affect reading aloud (sentence melody, word order, cases, prepositions). Use simple speaking/reading practice with neighbourhood and directions vocabulary.
- a) Identify sentence melody in reading for fluency (W‑questions vs yes/no vs statements).
- b) Read short texts aloud with correct word order and case forms to improve fluency.
- c) Recognise how grammatical structures (questions, prepositions, cases, separable verbs, imperatives) influence intonation and meaning when read aloud.
- d) Suggested vocabulary to use in examples: neighbourhood, directions, location, maps, prepositions → e.g. Wie komme ich …? / Wo finde ich …?
-
W‑questions (W‑Fragen) – question word first (Wer, Wo, Wie, Wann, Warum). Intonation: usually falling at the end (↓).
Beispiel: "Wie komme ich zum Bahnhof?" ↓Note: keep the main verb position correct (subject follows verb in yes/no, but W‑word stays first).
-
Yes/no questions (Ja/Nein‑Fragen) – verb comes first. Intonation: often rising (↑) in short speech.
Beispiel: "Komme ich hier richtig?" ↑
-
Statements (Aussagesätze) / V2 word order – verb in second position. Intonation: falling (↓) at the end.
Beispiel: "Ich gehe jeden Morgen zur Schule." ↓
-
Imperative (directions) – used for instructions. Formal/plural forms differ: "Geh geradeaus!" (du), "Gehen Sie geradeaus!" (Sie), "Geht geradeaus!" (ihr). Intonation: usually falling (↓) and shorter pauses.
Beispiel: "Biegen Sie links ab." ↓
-
Separable verbs (trennbare Verben) – the prefix moves to the end in main clauses. Important to read the prefix separately:
"Ich steige am Bahnhof aus." (aus‑steigen → "aus" read at end)
-
Two‑way prepositions (Wechselpräpositionen) – govern accusative for movement (direction) and dative for location (where):
- in, an, auf, neben, zwischen, vor, hinter
- Examples:
Bewegung (Wohin? → Akkusativ): "Ich gehe in die Schule." ↓ (movement toward school) Ort (Wo? → Dativ): "Ich bin in der Schule." ↓ (I am located in the school)
-
Fixed prepositions with cases – some prepositions always take a case:
- zu + Dativ → "Wie komme ich zum Markt?" (zu + dem = zum)
- nach (cities/countries) → "Fährst du nach Nairobi?"
- gegenüber + Dativ → "Das Café ist gegenüber dem Park."
-
Articles/contractions – read contracted forms correctly: "zum" (zu + dem), "zur" (zu + der), "am" (an + dem).
Beispiele: "zum Bahnhof", "zur Haltestelle", "am Supermarkt".
- "Wie komme ich zum Markt?" ↓ (W‑question: Wie → verb follows later; use falling intonation.)
- "Komme ich hier richtig?" ↑ (Yes/no question: verb first → rising intonation for short questions.)
- "Gehen Sie geradeaus, dann links." ↓ (Imperative instruction; read commands clearly and briefly.)
- "Ich gehe in die Schule." ↓ (movement → Akkusativ) "Ich bin in der Schule." ↓ (location → Dativ)
- "Steigen Sie am Bahnhof aus." ↓ (Separable verb: aus‑ at sentence end.)
- "Wo finde ich den Park?" ↓ (W‑question: expect falling intonation.)
- Echo reading (choral) with teacher: teacher reads one sentence; learners repeat copying intonation and separation of prefixes. Use the practice sentences above.
- Pair role‑play: one student asks "Wie komme ich zum Supermarkt?" The partner replies using correct word order, preposition and case. Swap roles.
-
Map activity (simple neighborhood map): students give directions using imperatives and correct prepositions. Focus task: change sentences from location (Dativ) to movement (Akkusativ) and read both aloud.
Task example: Map shows "Schule" and "Bibliothek". Student writes and reads: - "Die Bibliothek ist neben der Schule." (Wo? → Dativ) - "Gehe von der Schule in die Bibliothek." (Wohin? → Akkusativ)
- Case identification exercise: read a sentence aloud and underline prepositions that require Dativ or Akkusativ. Then explain aloud why case is used (movement vs location).
- Record & compare: students record their reading of a short directional dialogue and listen to notice intonation changes for questions vs statements.
- Listen for correct word order in questions and statements (verb position).
- Check correct case use after prepositions (accusative for movement, dative for location).
- Observe separable verbs read correctly (prefix at end).
- Note appropriate intonation for W‑questions (↓), yes/no (↑), and imperatives (↓).
