Animals — Different Food Products We Get from Animals

These are simple notes for Environmental Activities. We will learn the foods people in Kenya get from animals and how to look after animals so the food is healthy.

Main foods we get from animals:
  • 🐄 Cow milk — used in tea (chai), porridge, or made into butter, cheese and yoghurt.
  • 🐐 Goat milk and meat — goats are good in dry areas and give milk and meat.
  • 🐔 Chicken eggs and meat — eggs for breakfast and chicken for meals like stew or nyama choma.
  • 🐟 Fish — tilapia and Nile perch from Lake Victoria and other lakes; fish give protein and are eaten fresh or dried.
  • 🐝 Honey — from bees; used as a sweetener and sometimes medicine.
  • 🐑 Sheep meat (mutton) — many families eat sheep meat during celebrations.
  • 🐫 Camel milk — eaten in some parts of northern Kenya.
Other food products made from animal foods:
  • Butter and ghee — made from milk; used for cooking.
  • Yoghurt and fermented milk — like the sour milk some communities make (example: mursik).
  • Cheese — a solid food from milk.
  • Dried or smoked fish — to keep fish for longer.
Where these foods come from in Kenya
  • Cows and goats on farms and in villages (many parts of Kenya).
  • Fish from Lake Victoria, Lake Turkana, rivers and the Indian Ocean.
  • Honey from wild bees and beehives kept by beekeepers (apiaries).
  • Camels in northern Kenya provide milk for people living there.
How to keep animals healthy (so the food is safe)
  • Give animals clean water and good food.
  • Keep their shelter clean and dry.
  • Vaccinate animals when needed and call a vet if sick.
  • Wash your hands before and after touching animals or animal food.
  • Cook meat and fish well so germs are killed.
Class activity (easy)
  1. Draw your favourite animal that gives food. Write one food it gives (e.g., a cow — milk).
  2. Ask at home: "Which animal foods do we eat?" Share in class.
  3. Visit a small farm or market (if safe) and look for milk, eggs or honey.
Questions to think about
  • Which animal food do you eat every day?
  • How can we help farmers keep animals healthy?
  • Why is it important to not waste animal foods?

Remember: Animal foods give us energy and help us grow. Be kind to animals, keep them safe, and always wash your hands before eating.
