What To Consider When Choosing A Button
These notes help you pick the right button for clothes (like school shirts, kitenge dresses or jackets). Read the short points and try the small activity at the end.
Important things to think about
- Size ๐ข โ Big buttons are easy to hold (good for coats). Small buttons suit school shirts.
- Material ๐๐ โ Buttons can be plastic, metal, shell (from the sea), or wood. Plastic is light and good for clothes we wash a lot. Metal can rust if washed too much.
- Shape and look ๐จ โ Round, square or fancy shapes. Choose plain buttons for school uniforms and pretty ones for dresses.
- Colour and match ๐ฏ โ Match the button to the cloth. For school uniforms, use the same colour the school wants.
- Type of button ๐งท โ - Sew-through (2 or 4 holes) โ common on shirts. - Shank (has a stem at the back) โ used on coats. - Snaps or toggles โ used on jackets.
- Strength and washing ๐ชโ โ If the clothes will be washed often (like school shirts), pick strong buttons that do not break or come off easily.
- Ease of sewing ๐ชก โ Some buttons are easy for you or your parent to sew on (many holes). Others need a stronger stitch (shank buttons).
- Safety ๐ซ โ Very small buttons can be a choking danger for little children. Keep small buttons away from toddlers.

Quick checklist before you sew or buy
- โ Is the button strong enough for many washes?
- โ Does the colour match the cloth or school rules?
- โ Is the button the right size for the cloth and fingers?
- โ Is it safe for small children in the house?
Try this at home (short activity)
- Pick one shirt or dress you have.
- Look at the buttons: size, colour and material. Write one word about each (e.g., small, white, plastic).
- If a button is loose, ask an adult to help you sew it on or replace it with a stronger one.
Note for parents/teachers: help children with sewing and remind them about choking hazards for very young children.
