Subtopic: Choosing Foods (For 9-year-olds, Kenya)

1. What are foods?
Foods give us energy and help our bodies grow, fight sickness and work well at school and play. We get different things from food called nutrients.
2. Main food groups
🍚 Carbohydrates
Give energy to run and play. Examples: ugali, rice, chapati, maize, potatoes.
🍗 Proteins
Help muscles grow. Examples: beans, peas, lentils, fish (tilapia, Nile perch), eggs, nyama (meat).
🥦 Vitamins & Minerals
Keep you healthy and strong. Examples: sukuma wiki, spinach, carrots, mango, banana, avocado.
🧈 Fats
Give energy and keep you warm. Use small amounts of cooking oil, groundnuts or avocado.
💧 Water
Very important! Drink clean water every day.
3. A simple balanced plate (visual)

Eat often: vegetables, fruits, beans, plain porridge, water.
🟡 Yellow
Eat sometimes: fried chips, sugary snacks, fizzy drinks.
🔴 Red
Eat rarely: too much sweets, very oily food, too much soda.
6. Food safety and hygiene (easy tips)
- Wash hands with soap before eating and after using the toilet.
- Wash fruits and vegetables with clean water.
- Eat fresh, cooked food. Avoid food left out for many hours.
- Drink boiled or treated water if you are not sure it is clean.
7. Fun classroom/home activities
- Make your own balanced plate poster using cut-out pictures of Kenyan foods.
- Play "Green, Yellow, Red" food game: call a food and students step to the green/yellow/red spot.
- Keep a one-day food diary and check if you had veg + protein + carbs + water.
