Variety in the Diet

Subject: Home Science — Topic: Foods and Nutrition
For: Class age 9 (Kenya)

What does "variety in the diet" mean?

Variety means eating different kinds of foods every day. This helps your body grow, gives energy and keeps you healthy.

Why is variety important?

  • Different foods give different vitamins and minerals.
  • Variety helps you not get bored of the same food.
  • It helps you fight germs and stay strong for school and play.
  • Some foods help bones, some help the eyes, some help the body heal.

Main food groups (with Kenyan examples)

  • Starchy foods (Energy): ugali (maize), rice, chapati, potatoes, millet porridge.
  • Proteins (Body growth): beans, lentils, peas, beef, goat meat, fish (from lake or coast), eggs.
  • Milk and dairy: milk, yoghurt, maziwa lala.
  • Vegetables: sukuma wiki, spinach, kunde, traditional greens.
  • Fruits: bananas, mangoes, oranges, pawpaw (papaya), avocado.
  • Fats and oils (small amounts): cooking oil, groundnut (peanut) paste, avocado.

How to eat a good variety — easy tips for Kenyan families

  • Eat foods from at least three groups at each main meal: a starch, a vegetable, and a protein or milk.
  • Eat different coloured foods — red, green, yellow, orange — they often mean different vitamins.
  • Use beans, lentils or peas with maize to make meals cheaper and healthy (e.g., githeri).
  • Choose seasonal fruits — mangoes in season, bananas any time, oranges in cool months.
  • Plant a small kitchen garden: sukuma wiki, spinach, tomatoes or sukuma in pots—fresh and cheap.
  • Drink milk or add small yoghurt serving for strong bones.

Activities (fun and quick)

  1. Draw your last meal on a plate. Colour each food and label its group.
  2. Keep a food diary for one day: write everything you ate. Did you eat from many groups?
  3. Plant one vegetable seed in a cup and watch it grow. Record how often you water it.
