Subtopic: Common Illnesses in the Locality (for age 9)

Hello! These notes help you learn about illnesses you can see in our Kenyan communities, how to know them, and easy things you can do to stay healthy.

Malaria

Cause: A bite from a mosquito that has malaria. Common after rains when mosquitoes breed.

  • Symptoms: high fever, headache, chills, body pain, feeling very tired.
  • Prevention: sleep under a treated mosquito net, remove stagnant water, wear long sleeves at night.
  • What to do: tell an adult. Go to the clinic quickly — malaria can become serious.

Diarrhoea (Watery stools)

Cause: dirty water or food with germs. Sometimes linked to poor sanitation.

  • Symptoms: loose or watery stools, stomach pain, sometimes vomiting, and feeling weak.
  • Prevention: drink boiled or treated water, wash hands, cover food, use clean toilets.
  • What to do: give clean water and ORS (oral rehydration salts) to prevent dehydration. See a health worker if it is bloody or very bad.
🤧

Common Cold, Flu and Pneumonia

Cause: germs that spread when someone coughs or sneezes.

  • Symptoms: runny nose, cough, fever, trouble breathing (pneumonia).
  • Prevention: cover mouth when coughing, wash hands, stay away from others when sick, get vaccines.
  • What to do: rest, drink fluids. For fast breathing or chest pain, go to the clinic.
🐛

Intestinal Worms

Cause: tiny worms from dirty soil, unwashed hands, or unclean food.

  • Symptoms: stomach pain, lost appetite, feeling tired, sometimes weight loss.
  • Prevention: wear shoes, wash hands before eating, wash fruits and vegetables, keep nails short and clean.
  • What to do: the clinic can give a safe medicine (dewormer).
🩹

Skin Infections (e.g., Ringworm)

Cause: germs or fungus from touching dirty things or other people.

  • Symptoms: itchy red patches, sore spots, or blisters on skin.
  • Prevention: keep skin clean, do not share towels or combs, wash clothes well.
  • What to do: tell an adult. A clinic can give cream or medicine.

Simple Healthy Practices (Do these every day)

  • Wash hands with soap and clean water: before eating, after toilet, after playing outside. 🧼
  • Drink safe water: boil, filter, or treat water before drinking. 💧
  • Keep the compound clean: cover food, throw rubbish in a pit, cut grass where mosquitoes hide. 🗑️
  • Sleep under an insecticide-treated mosquito net every night. 🛏️🦟
  • Always use a toilet or latrine and keep it clean. 🚽
  • Eat cooked food and wash fruits and vegetables well. 🍎
  • Keep your nails short and clean. Avoid putting dirty hands in your mouth. ✋
  • Attend school health check-ups and vaccinations. They keep you safe. 💉

When to See a Health Worker (Go quickly)

  • High fever that does not go down.
  • Very bad diarrhea or vomiting, or cannot drink.
  • Difficulty breathing or fast breathing.
  • Bleeding, severe pain, or if a baby looks very weak.

Remember: Many illnesses can be stopped by keeping clean, using nets, and drinking safe water. Tell an adult and visit the clinic when in doubt. Stay healthy!
