(Topic: Laundry β Home Science, Age 9 β Kenya)
What materials do we use? π§Ίπ§Ό
- Clothes and school uniforms ππ
- Soap bars, washing powder or liquid detergent π§΄π§½
- Bleach or stain removers (for whites) β οΈ
- Buckets, basins and washing bowls πͺ£
- Brushes, clothespins and clothesline π§€π
- Iron and ironing board (adult use) ππ§―
- Sewing kit (for small tears) πͺ‘
Simple care steps before washing βοΈ
- Check pockets for stones, paper or money β remove them.
- Sort clothes by colour: whites, light colours, darks.
- Sort by fabric: heavy (towels) and light (school shirts).
- Treat stains quickly: rinse with clean water, rub soap gently.
How to care for materials and tools
- Detergent / soap: Keep the lid closed. Store in a dry place so powder doesn't become hard.
- Bleach and stain removers: Keep in their original bottle, tightly closed and away from children. Use only with an adult.
- Buckets & basins: Rinse and dry after use. Store upside-down so water does not collect.
- Brushes and clothespins: Keep in a box or basket to stop losing them.
- Iron: Always unplug and let it cool before storing. Wrap the cord neatly. Store out of childrenβs reach.
- Sewing kit: Keep needles in a pin cushion or box and scissors closed in a case.
- Clothes: Fold clean dry clothes and keep in a cupboard or shelf. For uniforms, hang where they stay neat.
Kenyan tips for drying and saving water ππ§
- Dry clothes in the sun to kill germs, but keep bright colours in the shade a little to stop fading.
- Use a bucket to wash β pour rinse water on plants (not near food plants) to save water.
- Dry clothes quickly so they don't smell or grow mildew.
Safety rules β very important! π«β οΈ
- Never taste or smell detergents. If you spill them on skin, rinse with lots of water and tell an adult.
- Keep cleaners and bleach high on a shelf where little children cannot reach.
- Ask an adult to use the iron and bleach. They can help you stay safe.
- If chemicals get in the eye: wash the eye with clean water and get help right away.
Quick storage checklist β
- Detergents sealed & dry β place on a shelf.
- Bleach stored in original bottle, away from food.
- Iron unplugged & cool β stored up high.
- Clothespins in a box β basins stacked inside each other.
- Clean dry clothes folded on shelves or in wardrobes.
