Subtopic: Steps in Laundry Work (for children, age 9, Kenya)
Laundry means cleaning clothes. Here are easy steps you can follow. Ask an adult to help when needed.
What you need ๐งบ
- Bucket or basin (big enough for clothes).
- Soap โ bar soap or washing powder (use child-safe amounts).
- Water (from tap, jerrycan or rainwater โ clean enough for washing).
- Clothesline or rope and pegs to dry.
- Towel for wiping, and a small brush for scrubbing tough stains.
-
Sort the clothes ๐๐
Put whites with whites and coloured clothes with colours. Keep very dirty clothes (muddy, oily) separate. -
Check the pockets and fasten buttons ๐
Empty pockets of paper, stones or money. Zip up and button shirts so they do not tear. -
Pre-treat stains ๐งผ
Rub a little soap on stains (grass, food) and let it sit for 5โ10 minutes. For strong stains, ask an adult for help. -
Wash โ by hand or machine ๐ง
- For hand wash: fill a basin with water, add soap, put clothes in and rub gently. Scrub collars and underarms with a brush.
- If using a washing machine, follow the machine settings and ask an adult to help. -
Rinse well ๐
Use clean water to rinse out soap. Rinse until no more bubbles come out. You can change the water once or twice. -
Wring out excess water ๐
Twist clothes gently to squeeze out water. For big items, press between your hands or use a wringer if you have one. Be careful not to hurt your hands. -
Dry in the sun โ๏ธ
Hang clothes on a clothesline or rope using pegs. Drying in sunlight helps kill germs and saves fuel. Turn clothes after they are partly dry. -
Iron and fold (if needed) ๐ฅโก๏ธ๐งบ
Iron clothes if the fabric needs it (an adult should use the iron). Fold or hang clothes neatly when dry. -
Store clothes properly ๐๏ธ
Keep clean clothes in a cupboard or on a shelf. Keep detergents and soaps out of children's reach.
Safety tips โ ๏ธ
- Never drink laundry water or soap. If you get soap in your eyes, wash with clean water and tell an adult.
- Ask an adult to handle hot water, bleach or the iron.
- Use small amounts of soap so skin does not get sore.
Quick checklist (tick when done) โ
- Sort clothes โ
- Empty pockets โ
- Pre-treat stains โ
- Wash and rinse โ
- Wring and hang to dry โ
- Fold and store โ
Little rhyme to remember: "Sort and scrub and rinse them bright, hang in sun till dry and light!"
Note for Kenyan homes: Many families wash by hand using basins, jerrycans or water from the tap. Dry clothes outside in the morning sun for best results.
