Grade 4 Home Science Kitchen Utensils – Fragility Notes
Home Science — Kitchen Utensils
What does "fragility" mean?
Fragility means how easily something breaks or cracks. A fragile kitchen utensil can break when it falls, is hit, or gets very cold or very hot quickly.
Think: glass cup 🔍 — it can shatter. Metal sufuria (aluminium pot) — not fragile, it will bend or stay whole.
Examples — fragile and not fragile
Why learn about fragility?
- To keep people safe — broken glass can cut fingers. ⚠️
- To take care of our utensils so they last longer.
- To sort utensils for washing, storing and using (handle fragile ones gently).
Care and safety tips for fragile utensils
- Hold with both hands when carrying a glass or ceramic plate. 👐
- Do not stack fragile plates too high. Keep them on a soft surface or use separators.
- Wash fragile items gently with a soft sponge. Avoid strong scrubbing. 🧼
- Avoid quick temperature change — do not put a very hot glass into cold water (it may crack).
- If an item cracks, tell an adult. Do not use or try to fix it by yourself. 🚫
Easy activity (do with a teacher or parent)
Sound test: Place a small glass cup and a metal cup on the table. Tap each gently with a wooden spoon. Which one rings more? What does the sound tell you about fragility?
Sorting game: Make two boxes labelled Fragile and Not Fragile. Put pictures or small items (plastic spoon, glass cup, metal spoon, ceramic plate) in the correct box.
Words to remember
Fragile — breaks easily.
Durable — lasts and does not break easily.
Cracked — has a line where it may break.
Shatter — break into many pieces.
