Subtopic: Effects of Unfavourable Weather Conditions

Hello! Today we learn how bad weather (unfavourable weather) can affect people, animals and plants in Kenya. We will use simple words and fun pictures. Remember to always ask an adult for help when a storm or heavy rain comes.

What are unfavourable weather conditions?

These are weather events that cause problems. Examples: very hot days, long droughts, heavy rains that cause floods, strong winds and storms.

How bad weather can affect us (effects)

  • People: We can get sick, lose homes in floods, or not have enough water during droughts.
  • Farms and food: Crops like maize and vegetables can die from too little rain or too much rain. This means less food.
  • Animals: Cows, goats and sheep may not find water or grass during droughts. Fishers on the coast may not go to sea when there are strong storms.
  • Homes and roads: Heavy rains can wash away roads and make it hard to travel to school. Strong winds can break roofs.
  • Water and soil: Floods can make water dirty. Droughts make the soil dry and cracked.

Examples from Kenya (simple)

  • In dry areas of northern Kenya, droughts make it hard for families and pastoralists to find water for livestock.
  • Heavy rains near rivers can cause floods in low-lying homes and farms.
  • Along the coast, strong storms make it unsafe for fishermen to go to sea.

What we can do to help (easy actions)

Save water

Use a small bucket to wash plates, collect rainwater for plants.

Plant trees

Trees give shade and help stop soil from washing away.

Listen to weather news

Ask an adult to listen to radio or check weather before going out.

Safety tips (always with an adult)

  • If rain or flood comes, move to higher ground and stay with family.
  • During strong winds, stay indoors and away from broken branches.
  • Keep water clean by using covered containers.

Fun activity (class or home)

Draw a poster showing one bad weather and write one way to stay safe. Use crayons and stick it on your wall at home or in class.

Short quiz (try to answer)

  1. What can we do to save water? (Hint: collect rainwater)
  2. Name one animal that may have trouble during drought.
  3. Where should you go if your house floods? (Hint: higher ground)
Remember: Unfavourable weather can be dangerous, but with small actions we can protect ourselves, our animals and our plants. Always listen to adults and keep safe. 🌍💚
