Environment And Its Resources

Subtopic: Exploring Unfavourable Weather Conditions

Hello! We will learn about unfavourable weather β€” weather that can make life hard for people, animals and plants. This is for children in Kenya (age 8). Read, do the activities and stay safe!

🌧️
Heavy Rain
Can cause floods and muddy roads.
β˜€οΈπŸ”₯
Heat & Drought
Less water for crops and animals.
🌬️
Strong Winds
Can break trees and roofs.
πŸŒͺ️
Storms & Hail
Can harm crops and houses.

How unfavourable weather affects our environment and resources

  • Floods wash away soil and can damage farms and roads.
  • Drought makes rivers, wells and farms dry. People and animals may not get enough water.
  • Strong winds and storms can break trees and destroy houses.
  • When crops fail, there is less food and farmers lose money.

Examples in Kenya (simple)

Kenya has two rainy seasons: the long rains (March–May) and the short rains (October–December). In some years:

  • Drought happens in northern and eastern Kenya (dry and hot).
  • Floods happen in coastal and some western areas when heavy rains fall.
  • Landslides can happen in highland areas when the ground is very wet.

Safety rules for children (easy to remember)

  1. When it rains hard, stay indoors with an adult. β˜”οΈ
  2. Away from rivers and floodwater β€” it can be dangerous. 🚫
  3. During strong wind, stay away from trees and tall walls. 🌳
  4. Save water at home: close taps and collect rainwater safely. πŸ’§
  5. If you hear thunder, go inside and stay with family. ⚑️

What you can do to help (child-friendly activities)

  • Plant a tree near school or home to stop soil from washing away. 🌱
  • Keep a small water jar to save water for plants (use saved water for watering). 🚰
  • Make a simple "weather diary": watch the sky for a week and draw the weather each day. ✍️
  • Help clean drains near your home so rainwater can flow away and not cause floods. 🧹

Tip: Ask an adult to write the temperature or if it rained. Show your diary to your teacher.

Short quiz (ask an adult to help)

  • 1. Name two unfavourable weathers. (Answer: heavy rain and drought)
  • 2. What should you do in heavy rain? (Answer: stay indoors and keep away from flood water)
  • 3. How can you help your school during dry weather? (Answer: save water and plant trees)
Remember: The weather can change how we live and how our resources (water, soil, trees) are used. With small acts β€” like saving water and planting trees β€” you can help keep the environment healthy. πŸ‡°πŸ‡ͺ
