Subtopic: Healthy Practices
Topic: topic_name_replace  |  Subject: subject_replace  |  Target age: age_replace
Wash hands with soap
Eat balanced local foods
Play & exercise daily
Get enough sleep
This note covers practical, school- and home-based healthy practices relevant to Kenya that learners aged age_replace can understand and practise. Examples use local foods (ugali, sukuma wiki, beans, fish, fruits), common Kenyan health concerns (malaria, water safety, sanitation), and everyday school/home routines.
Specific Learning Outcomes
  • List at least five healthy practices used at home and in school (hygiene, nutrition, sleep, exercise, disease prevention).
  • Demonstrate proper handwashing with soap and water in the correct stages.
  • Explain how to keep drinking water safe (boiling, covering jerrycans, using chlorine tablets) and why it matters in Kenya.
  • Plan a simple, balanced meal using local foods that meets basic nutrition needs.
  • Describe two ways to prevent malaria and one way to reduce mosquito breeding around the compound.
  • Show basic first-aid steps for small cuts and know when to seek a health worker.
  • Promote good sanitation: use of latrines, safe waste disposal, and importance of school cleanliness.
Suggested Learning Experiences (classroom & community)
Use active, hands-on methods suited to learners aged age_replace. Where possible involve parents, the school health club, local health workers or community health volunteers (CHVs).
  1. Handwashing demonstration
Teacher or CHV demonstrates 6 steps of handwashing with a bucket, soap and running/flowing water. Learners practice in pairs. Emphasise times to wash (before eating, after toilet, after playing).
  2. Nutrition activity: Local plate planning
Provide picture cards or draw local foods (ugali, sukuma wiki, beans, matoke, fish, mango, bananas). In groups learners create a balanced meal for a school child and present their reasoning.
  3. Role-play: Preventing malaria and safe water
Short skits show how to use bed nets, remove stagnant water, cover jerrycans and treat water. Invite a health worker to explain nets and deworming schedules used in Kenya.
  4. School compound clean-up & observation
Learners organise a supervised clean-up, check for breeding sites, and make posters about latrine use and waste disposal. Use this to discuss sanitation and cholera prevention.
  5. First-aid mini-workshop
Teach cleaning and dressing small cuts, treating insect stings and when to go to a clinic. Practice with role-play; highlight dangers of traditional harmful remedies.
  6. Home learning & community link
Assign a home task: learners check water storage and handwashing facilities at home and report. Encourage parents to join a short meeting about healthy practices.
  7. Creative expression
Make posters, songs or short jingles in a local language about healthy habits. Display in classrooms or compound noticeboards.
Lesson flow (45–60 min)
Intro (5 min): Ask learners when they last washed hands & what they ate.
Demonstration (10–12 min): Handwashing + discuss safe water & nets.
Activity (15–20 min): Group plate planning or role play.
Share (8–10 min): Group presentations & teacher feedback.
Assessment/Home task (5 min): Short quiz or home-check.
Resources & links (Kenya)
  • Soap, buckets/Pedestals (tippy-tap), jerrycans with lids
  • Picture cards of Kenyan foods; flipchart or poster paper
  • Local CHV or school nurse for demonstrations
  • MOH & County Health promotion flyers; UNICEF/WHO hygiene materials
  • Bed-nets (where applicable) and info on national net campaigns
Assessment & Safety Notes
Assessment:
  • Observe handwashing technique checklist (presence of soap, rubbing time, drying).
  • Short group presentation judged for understanding of nutrition and prevention steps.
  • Written/oral quiz: name 3 ways to keep water safe; what to do for a small cut.
Safety notes:
  • Supervise use of water near children; avoid unsafe water sources during field visits.
  • In role-play or first-aid practice, use safe props only. Do not use real medicines without health worker supervision.
  • Respect privacy for menstrual-hygiene activities; ensure girls have access to sanitary facilities and guidance.
Key takeaways
  • Wash hands with soap at key times.
  • Eat a mix of ugali, vegetables, legumes, fish or meat and fruits.
  • Use bed nets, remove standing water and treat drinking water.
Extension ideas
  • Start a school garden to grow sukuma wiki and vegetables for the feeding program.
  • Form a Health Club to monitor hygiene, organise deworming reminders and net distribution drives.
  • Invite a local nurse to talk about immunisation schedules and adolescent health topics.
Note: Adapt activities by age and context — for younger learners keep demonstrations short and use pictures; for older learners include deeper discussion on nutrition, adolescent health and community health promotion. Align with Kenya's national school health guidelines where available.
