WRITING: WRITING — REHABILITATION (English grammar notes)
Age: 13 (Kenya) — Focus: grammar you need when writing about rehabilitation (people recovering, centres, services, community support).
1. Quick meaning (for context)
Rehabilitation = helping someone get better after illness, injury or addiction. When you write about it, use the right tense, clear sentences, linking words and correct punctuation.
2. Tenses you will use most
- Present simple — facts and general truths.
Example: A rehabilitation centre offers therapy and counselling.
- Present continuous — actions happening now or temporary programmes.
Example: Nurses are teaching exercises to patients this week.
- Past simple — finished events.
Example: The team organised a community training last month.
- Present perfect — experiences or actions that affect the present.
Example: The centre has helped many children reintegrate into school.
3. Passive voice — useful in formal reports
Use passive to focus on the action or person helped, not who did it.
- Active: The physiotherapist teaches exercises.
- Passive: Exercises are taught by the physiotherapist. ✅ (common in reports)
4. Modal verbs — giving advice or stating possibility
- Must / should / ought to — advice and obligation.
Example: Patients should follow the exercise plan.
- Can / could / may — ability or permission.
Example: Children can attend the weekly therapy group.
5. Linking words — make writing smooth
Use connectors to join ideas:
For sequence: firstly, secondly, finally.
For cause/effect: because, therefore, as a result.
For contrast: however, although, but.
For adding: in addition, moreover, also.

6. Paragraph structure (easy to remember)
- Topic sentence — state main idea.

Singular subject → singular verb: The centre provides care.

Use reported speech for quotes in reports:
Direct: "We offer free therapy," the nurse said.

- Full stops to end sentences.
- Commas to list or separate ideas: The team includes physiotherapists, nurses, and counsellors.
- Colons for lists: The centre provides: assessment, therapy and community support.
- Quotation marks for direct speech.
11. Short writing task (exam practice)
Write a paragraph (6–8 sentences) about a rehabilitation centre in your area. Use:
- Present simple and present continuous appropriately
