English Notes: Wild and Domestic Animals

Age: 6 • Topic: Animals • Subtopic: Wild and Domestic Animals (grammar focus)

1. Noun: Name of a thing

A noun names a person, place or animal. Here we learn animal nouns.

🦁
lion
(wild)
🐄
cow
(domestic)
🐘
elephant
(wild)
🐐
goat
(domestic)

2. Wild or Domestic?

Wild animals live in the wild (forests, savanna). Domestic animals live with people.

  • Wild: lion, elephant, zebra, buffalo
  • Domestic: cow, goat, chicken, dog, cat

3. Singular and Plural

Singular = one. Plural = more than one. For many animals, add "s".

one cow → cows
one goat → goats
one lion → lions
one elephant → elephants

Some plurals do not change:

  • one sheep → many sheep
  • one fish → many fish

4. Articles: a, an, the

Use a before words that start with a consonant sound. Use an before words that start with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u). Use the for a specific animal.

a dog, a lion, a cow
an elephant, an ox
the zebra (we mean a certain zebra)

5. Simple sentences — is / are

Use is with one animal. Use are with more than one.

The lion is big.
The cows are on the farm.
A goat is small.
The elephants are heavy.

Add a simple adjective: big, small, strong, brown.
