WH Questions — Use of Who, What and Where

WH words help us seek information. Today we learn three WH words: Who, What and Where.


1. Who — asks about a person

Use "Who" when you want to know the person doing something or the name of a person.

Examples:

  • Who is the teacher? 👩‍🏫 — She is Mrs. Achieng.
  • Who cooks ugali? — My mother cooks ugali. 🍲
  • Who is at the market? — The seller is at the market. 🛒

2. What — asks about a thing or idea

Use "What" when you want to know a thing, name of an object, or an idea.

Examples:

  • What is this? — It is a book. 📚
  • What do you eat? — I eat maize and beans. 🌽🥣
  • What is in the basket? — There are oranges. 🍊

3. Where — asks about a place

Use "Where" when you want to know the place or location.

Examples:

  • Where is the school? — It is near the big tree. 🏫🌳
  • Where do you live? — I live in Nakuru. 🏡
  • Where is the goat? — The goat is in the field. 🐐🌾

How to use them in a question

Put the WH word at the start of your question:

Who + verb?    What + verb?    Where + verb?

Short tip: Answers for "Who" are people, for "What" are things, for "Where" are places.

  1. Who is this? — _______________ (example: My teacher)
  2. What is this? — _______________ (example: a pencil ✏️)
  3. Where is the cat? — _______________ (example: under the bed 🛏️)
  4. Who helps you at home? — _______________ (example: my mother)
  5. What do you buy at the market? — _______________ (example: mangoes)
  6. Where do you go to learn? — _______________ (example: school 🏫)

Activity for class or home: Ask a friend these questions. Listen and write the answers.


Remember

  • Use "Who" for people.
  • Use "What" for things or names of things.
  • Use "Where" for places.
