Language Structures & Functions — Shapes (English)
Age: 6 (Kenyan primary learners). Focus: simple grammar using words for shapes.
1. Names of shapes (Nouns)
These are common nouns. Say them and point to the shape.

2. Sentences: This is / These are
Use "This is" for one thing close to you. Use "These are" for many things close to you.
- This is a circle. (one)
- These are circles. (more than one)
- This is a square.
- These are squares.
3. Articles: a, an, the
Use "a" before words that start with a consonant sound. Use "an" before vowel sounds. Use "the" for a specific thing.
- a circle
- a square
- a triangle
- an oval (starts with vowel sound)
- The circle is red. (one special circle)
4. Plurals: add -s
To say more than one, add -s.
- circle → circles
- square → squares
- triangle → triangles
5. Adjectives: describe shapes
Put the adjective before the noun.
- a big circle
- a small square
- a red triangle
- two blue circles
6. Demonstratives: this / that / these / those
Use "this" and "these" for things near. Use "that" and "those" for things far.
- This is a star. (one near)
- That is a star. (one far)
- These are hearts. (many near)
- Those are hearts. (many far)
7. Prepositions of place (use with shapes)
Simple words that tell where something is.
- The circle is on the table.
- The square is under the chair.
- The triangle is next to the box.
- The star is near the book.
8. Questions and short answers
Ask and answer about shapes.
- What is this? — It is a circle.
- What are these? — They are squares.
- Is this a triangle? — Yes, it is. / No, it is not.
9. Practice (say or write)
- Look around your classroom. Say three sentences: "This is a ...".
- Change the sentence to plural: "These are ...".
- Make a sentence with an adjective: "The small red circle is on the desk."
- Answer: What is this? (look at a shape) — __________________
Tips for teachers/parents: Use real objects (plates, books, pictures). Point and ask: "This is a circle. Is it big or small? What colour?" Encourage full short answers: "It is a big blue circle."
