What are months?

Months are words that name the twelve parts of the year. They are special names (proper nouns).

The 12 months

January February March April May June July August September October November December

Simple grammar rules

  • Always start months with a capital letter. Example: "June" (not "june").
  • Use the word "in" before a month. Example: "My birthday is in May."
  • Say the order of months with numbers: Example: "January is the first month."
  • Short forms (abbreviations): Jan., Feb., Mar. — they still start with a capital letter.
  • When you give a date, you can say: "on 5 March" or "on the 5th of March".
