English: Animals — Young ones

Grade / Age: Kenyan learners, Age 6

1. Names (Nouns) — adult and baby

These words are nouns. The first word is the adult animal, the second is the baby.

  • Dog 🐶 — puppy
  • Cat 🐱 — kitten
  • Cow 🐄 — calf
  • Sheep 🐑 — lamb
  • Goat 🐐 — kid
  • Chicken 🐔 — chick
  • Duck 🦆 — duckling
  • Horse 🐴 — foal

2. Short grammar rules (easy)

Singular — one animal.

Example: "This is a puppy." (one)

Plural — more than one. Often we add 's'.

Example: "These are puppies." (more than one)

Use of 'a' and 'the':

  • a — any one (use before singular noun that we mention for the first time): "A chick is small."
  • the — a specific one we know: "The chick is small." (we talk about one we have seen)

Use of 'is' and 'are': "is" for one (singular). "are" for many (plural).

Examples: "The lamb is soft." — "The lambs are soft."

3. Demonstratives: this / these

Use "this is" for one close animal. Use "these are" for more than one close animals.

Examples:

  • "This is a kitten." (1 kitten)
  • "These are kittens." (2 or more kittens)

4. Simple sentences — practice reading

  1. This is a puppy.
  2. The puppy is small.
  3. These are chicks.
  4. A cow has a calf.
  5. The lamb is white.

5. Fun activities (do with a teacher or at home)

Activity A — Match (draw line or point)

  • Dog — _____ (puppy)
  • Horse — _____ (foal)
  • Chicken — _____ (chick)
  • Goat — _____ (kid)

Activity B — Fill the blanks with a / the / an / (is / are)

  1. _____ kitten is small. (This / These)
  2. These _____ chicks. (is / are)
  3. I see _____ cow and _____ calf. (a / the)

(Teacher: read the sentences aloud and help the child answer.)

6. Answers (check together)

  • Match answers: puppy, foal, chick, kid.
  • Fill blanks:
    • 1. This kitten is small.
    • 2. These are chicks.
    • 3. I see a cow and a calf. (or "I see the cow and the calf." if you mean specific ones)
