Subtopic: Colours (for 6-year-olds)

We use colour words to tell what colour things are. Colour words are adjectives. Adjectives come before the noun.

How to say it:
  • A red ball. (adjective + noun)
  • A blue car.
  • Green leaves.
Common colour words:
red blue green yellow black white brown orange pink purple
Sentence practice — using is / are

Use "is" for one thing. Use "are" for more than one thing.

  • The apple is red. (one apple)
  • The apples are red. (many apples)
  • The car is blue. / The cars are blue.
Questions and answers

Ask: "What colour is the ...?" Answer: "It is ..." or "They are ..."

  • Q: What colour is the kite?
    A: It is green.
  • Q: What colour are the shoes?
    A: They are brown.
Special Kenyan example

The Kenya flag has black, red, green and white. We can say:

The flag is black, red, green and white.

Short activities (speak aloud)
  1. Find something red. Say: "This is a red ..."
  2. Look for two blue things. Say: "These are blue ..."
  3. Teacher/parent: Ask "What colour is your shirt?" Child answers.
Quick grammar tips
  • Colour words do not change for plural: "red ball" / "red balls".
  • Put the colour word before the noun: "a yellow book."
  • Use "is" for one thing and "are" for many things.
