Grade 7 CRE CHRISTIAN LIVING TODAY – CHRISTIAN MARRIAGE AND FAMILY Notes
CRE NOTES: Christian Living Today
Subtopic: Christian Marriage and Family 👨👩👧👦❤️
These notes explain what Christian marriage and family mean, how families live by Christian values in Kenya, and what children—like you (age 12)—can do to help your family grow strong.
A Christian marriage is a promise (a covenant) between two people who love each other and want to live together under God's blessing. It is usually celebrated in a church and involves vows to love, respect and care for each other.
- To love and support each other.
- To start a family and raise children safely.
- To work together and help each other follow God.
- God-centred: God is part of the relationship.
- Promise of faithfulness and mutual respect.
- Public and legal: often blessed in church and registered.
Family Roles and Responsibilities (simple) 🧩
In a Christian family, people have different jobs, but everyone helps. Important things are love, respect, and working together.
- Parents: Protect children, teach them about God, provide food, and show love.
- Children: Show respect, help with home tasks, listen to parents, and learn good values.
- Grandparents / Elders: Give advice, share stories, and are cared for by the family.
The law in Kenya says you must be at least 18 years old to marry. Child marriage is not allowed. Families and churches protect children and help them finish school.
Christian Values in the Home 🙏
- Prayer together: Families pray and thank God daily.
- Reading the Bible: Parents teach children simple Bible stories and verses.
- Love and forgiveness: Families forgive each other like Jesus teaches.
- Respect and care: Children honour their parents; parents care for children.
- Sharing and helping: Family members share food, chores, and money wisely.
- "Honor your father and mother." (Exodus 20:12)
- "Start children in the way they should go." (Proverbs 22:6)
- "Be kind and compassionate to one another." (Ephesians 4:32)
How the Church Helps Families ⛪
- Pre-marriage classes to teach couples how to live together in Christian ways.
- Counselling when there are problems in the home.
- Programs for families: parenting classes, youth groups, and family worship.
How You Can Help at Home (for age 12) 👍
- Help with small chores: fetch water, sweep, wash dishes.
- Respect and greet older family members politely.
- Share what you learn at Sunday school with your family.
- Pray for your family each day, even a short prayer is good.
- Tell a trusted adult if a child in the home is being hurt or is being asked to marry early.
- Draw your family tree and write one way each person shows love.
- Role-play: one child acts as parent, one as child—practice a calm conversation about chores.
- Memorize one short Bible verse about family this week and say it at family prayer.
