Grade 7 CRE CHRISTIAN LIVING TODAY – GAMBLING Notes
CRE Notes: Christian Living Today — Gambling 🎲
Subtopic: Gambling • Subject: CRE • For learners aged 12 (Kenya)
1. What is gambling?
Gambling means betting money or things of value on an unsure result to try to win more. Examples in Kenya: betting on football, buying scratch-cards or lottery tickets, playing casino games, and betting using mobile apps (like agents or online services).
2. Common places you see gambling
- Bet shops and kiosks near market places.
- Mobile betting through phones (using M‑Pesa to deposit money).
- Social media and apps advertising quick money.
3. Why is gambling risky?
- Gambling causes loss of money quickly — many people end up poorer.
- It can become addictive; people keep trying to win back losses.
- It may lead to lying, stealing, or neglecting family responsibilities.
- It wastes time that could be used for school, work, or serving others.
4. A Christian view (simple points)
- God wants us to be good stewards of what we have — not gamble it away (Luke 12:15 warns about greed).
- Love of money can lead people away from God (1 Timothy 6:10 — “the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil”).
- Christians are called to be honest and help others, not to make quick money at the cost of others’ harm.
- Contentment and trust in God are better than risking everything for chance (Hebrews 13:5 speaks of being content).
• "Keep your life free from the love of money." — 1 Timothy 6:10 (simple meaning: don't put money first).
• "Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed." — Luke 12:15.
5. What should a Christian (aged 12) do?
- Say no if friends invite you to bet. It’s okay to refuse politely.
- Avoid places and apps where people gamble if they tempt you.
- Talk to a parent, teacher, or church leader if someone pressures you.
- Use your pocket money wisely — save or give to good causes.
- Pray and ask for strength to make the right choices.
6. Practical alternatives to gambling
- Start a small savings tin or bank account for school needs.
- Join church youth groups, sports, or clubs to use free time well.
- Learn a small skill (beading, baking, tutoring) to earn honest money.
- Save money
- Help others
- Talk about pressures
- Gamble with school fees
- Lie about money
- Follow friends into trouble
7. Classroom activity (10–15 minutes)
Role-play: In groups, act out a short scene where one pupil is asked to join betting. Practice saying no and telling a trusted adult. Discuss how you felt and what the right choices were.
8. Questions for reflection / homework
- Why is it important to be a good steward of money?
- Write a short prayer asking God to help you choose well.
- List three things you can do this week instead of spending money on risky games.
Lord, help me to be wise with money and to love you more than money. Give me courage to say no and strength to help others. Amen.
Teacher tip: Encourage open discussion. Many Kenyan youths see betting adverts — use local examples to show risks and better choices.
