CRE Notes β Christian Living Today
Subtopic: Social Media (for age 12, Kenya)
What is social media?
Social media = apps and websites where people share messages, pictures, videos and meet others. Examples Kenyans know: WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok.
Why social media matters to Christians
- Share the Good News: can share Bible stories, songs and prayers with friends and family.
- Learn and grow: watch Christian videos, join youth group chats and online Bible classes.
- Show Christ's love: treat people kindly and help others through social media.
Good things about social media (π)
- Connect with friends and church youth groups across Kenya.
- Access Christian songs, sermons and Bible stories anytime.
- Share prayers and encouraging messages with others.
Dangers to watch out for (β οΈ)
- Wrong or harmful content: videos or messages that go against Christian values.
- Cyberbullying: unkind messages, spreading rumours or mean comments.
- Privacy risks: sharing photos or personal details can be dangerous.
- Bad influence: pressure to copy wrong behaviour to gain likes.
What the Bible teaches (short reminders)
- Philippians 4:8 β Think about what is true, noble and right. Share and watch good things.
- Ephesians 4:29 β Use words that build others up, not hurt them.
- Matthew 5:16 β Let your good actions (and posts) show God's love to others.
Practical tips β Be a Christian online (β)
- Think before you post: will this help others? Is it true? Is it kind?
- Keep private details private: don't share your home address, phone or school details publicly.
- Respect others: no name-calling, share disagreements kindly.
- Set screen times: balance studying, family time, church and social media.
- Tell a trusted adult if someone makes you uncomfortable or asks for private pictures.
- Follow age rules: many apps need you to be older than 13 β ask a parent or teacher for guidance.
Quick checklist for a Christian post
- Is it true?
- Is it kind?
- Will it help someone?
- Would my parents or pastor approve?
Short class activities (5β10 minutes)
- Role play: one student posts something unkind; another practices a gentle, Christian response.
- Spot the post: teacher shows 3 short example posts β students vote which one follows Philippians 4:8.
- Prayer circle: pray for friends online and those hurt by mean messages.
Short quiz (write answers in class)
- Name two good uses of social media for Christians.
- What should you do if someone asks for your private photos?
- Give one Bible verse that helps you post kindly.
Memory Verse (learn this):
βLet everything you say be good and useful, so that the people who hear you will be helped.β β (based on Ephesians 4:29, easy words)
Short prayer
Lord, help me to use social media wisely. Let my words be kind, my posts honest, and my eyes search for truth. Guide me to help others and to tell a grown-up when I am afraid. Amen.
Note for teachers/parents: encourage open talk about apps children use. Remind them to set privacy settings together and to come to you when something online worries them.
