CREATION — RESPONSIBILITY OVER PLANTS

Topic: Creation | Subtopic: Responsibility over Plants
Subject: CRE — for learners aged about 12 (Kenya).

What does "responsibility over plants" mean?

It means taking care of the trees, crops, flowers and gardens God has given us. We look after them so they can grow, give food, clean the air, and make our land healthy.

1. Biblical basis (why Christians care)

  • Genesis 2:15 — God put Adam in the garden to "work it and keep it." This teaches stewardship (taking care).
  • We are called to care for God's creation (plants are part of creation).
  • Showing care for plants is part of loving our neighbours — plants give food, shade and soil protection.

2. Why plants are important (short)

Food
Fruits, vegetables, grains — food for people and animals. 🍌🥦
Water & Soil
Roots hold soil and help clean water. 💧
Climate
Trees give shade and reduce heat; they store carbon. 🌳☀️

3. Our responsibilities — simple actions

  1. Plant trees and seedlings: in school, at home or in community projects.
  2. Water regularly: young plants need water, especially in dry seasons.
  3. Protect plants: use fences or guards to stop animals from eating young trees.
  4. Stop hurting forests: avoid cutting trees unnecessarily; do not support illegal charcoal burning.
  5. Use plants well: harvest crops fairly, share food, save seeds for next season.
  6. Learn and teach: share knowledge with your family and friends about caring for plants.

4. Practical tips for Kenyan pupils

  • Join or start a school tree-planting club — plant drought-tolerant trees like Grevillea or native species that do well in your area.
  • Make a watering rota for the school garden during weekends/holidays.
  • Use kitchen waste to make compost for the garden instead of burning it.
  • Save seeds from healthy plants to plant next season (seed saving).
  • Report illegal tree cutting or charcoal burning to local leaders or the forest service.
Mini classroom activity:

Plant one tree at school. Choose a tree, dig a hole, plant, water, and make a 6-month care plan. Record growth by taking notes or drawing the tree each month.

5. Link to community and Kenya

In Kenya, forests like the Mau and Kakamega are important for water and farming. When we protect plants we help farmers, protect rivers and stop soil erosion. Taking care of plants helps Kenya stay healthy and productive.

Memory verse
Genesis 2:15 (simple)
"The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it."
Prayer idea
Thank God for plants. Ask for help to care for them and to share food from the land with others.

6. Quick quiz (answer in class)

  1. Write one Bible verse that teaches caring for creation.
  2. Name three ways plants help people in Kenya.
  3. List two things you can do this week to care for plants at home or school.

Remember: Caring for plants is part of loving God's creation and loving our neighbours. Small acts — like planting a seed — make a big difference. 🌱
