THE CHURCH
1. What is "the Church"?
The word "church" can mean different things:
- A local building where people meet to worship (βͺ).
- The group of people who gather to worship and carry out Christian life together.
- The worldwide Christian community across denominations and countries.
2. Key functions of the Church
- Worship and prayer β communal singing, preaching, and prayer (πΆπ).
- Teaching β reading the Bible and explaining Christian beliefs (π).
- Service β helping the poor and sick, running schools and hospitals (π₯π).
- Community β offering support, fellowship and social care (β€οΈ).
- Rituals and milestones β baptisms, weddings, funerals and special services.
3. Structure and leaders
Churches are organised in different ways depending on the denomination. Common roles include:
- Priest, pastor or minister β leads worship and gives spiritual guidance.
- Bishops or elders β oversee groups of churches in some denominations.
- Deacons and volunteers β help with practical work and care.
4. Worship, symbols and rituals
Worship styles vary from formal liturgy to informal praise. Some common symbols and rituals include:
- Cross or crucifix (βοΈ) β a central Christian symbol.
- Holy Communion / Eucharist β remembering Jesus through bread and wine (or alternatives).
- Baptism β a ceremony of welcome and new life.
- Hymns, prayers and sermons β ways people express faith together.
5. The Church in the Kenyan context
Christianity is one of the main religions in Kenya. Churches play an important role in:
- Education β many primary, secondary and tertiary schools were started by churches.
- Health β mission hospitals and clinics serve rural and urban communities.
- Social development β churches run food programs, youth groups and counselling services.
- National life β church leaders often speak on issues like peace, justice and ethics.
- Diversity β Kenya has Roman Catholic, Anglican, Presbyterian, Methodist, Pentecostal, African Independent Churches (AIC), and other denominations.
6. The Church and young people
For students and youth, churches often offer:
- Youth fellowships, Sunday schools and Bible study groups.
- Opportunities to volunteer, learn leadership and join music or drama teams.
- Support on moral and life issues, mentoring and counselling.
7. Values and social teachings
Churches commonly teach values that guide personal and community life:
- Love, compassion and care for others (charity and community service).
- Honesty, responsibility and respect for others.
- Peace-building and reconciliation, especially in tense community situations.
8. Important days and festivals
Christians in Kenya celebrate several annual events, for example:
- Christmas β celebrating the birth of Jesus (Dec).
- Easter β remembering the death and resurrection of Jesus (date varies).
- Other denominational festivals and national church days.
