Subtopic: Equipment and Sector in Standing Javelin (Age ~11, Kenya)

Learning goals
  • Know the basic equipment used in standing javelin.
  • Understand the throwing sector and where the javelin must land.
  • Follow simple safety rules when practising.
What equipment do we need?
  • Javelin (school/training type): for 11-year-olds use light junior javelins (often 400 g and about 1.0–1.2 m long). Check your school’s stores — sizes can vary. ✅
  • Training javelins: foam or rubber javelins are safer for beginners. ✅
  • Markers or cones to mark the throwing line and sector borders.
  • Measuring tape to measure throws.
  • First-aid kit and adult supervisor/teacher. ❗
Standing javelin — basic idea

In standing javelin the thrower stands behind a throw line (no long run-up) and throws the javelin into a marked sector on the field. Focus is on grip, aim and safe release.

Throwing sector (simple diagram)
Throw line Sector (~29°)

What the picture shows:

  • Throw line (where the athlete stands).
  • Sector is the wedge-shaped landing area. Official sector angle is about 29° — in school use clear cones or paint to mark the two border lines.
  • The javelin must land inside the sector to be a legal throw.
Simple layout notes for teachers
  • Mark a clear throw line with tape or chalk. The athlete stands with toes just behind the line.
  • Use two straight lines or cones forming the sector from the throw line. For school practice, make sure the landing area is wide and long enough and free from people.
  • Keep spectators, helpers and other students well behind the sector borders. Safety first. ❗
Basic safety rules (very important)
  1. Only one thrower in the throwing area. Others wait well behind the sector. ✅
  2. Teacher or coach must watch every throw. Use foam javelins for beginners. ✅
  3. Do not run into the landing area to fetch javelins — wait until the thrower and teacher say it is safe. ❗
  4. Always point the javelin tip to the ground when carrying. Hold it by the grip. ✅
Basic steps to teach a standing javelin throw (age 11)
  1. Stand side-on to the sector with feet shoulder-width apart. Hold the javelin near the grip with the tip pointing forward and slightly up.
  2. Take a small step forward with the front foot while raising the throwing arm back. Keep eyes on the target area inside the sector.
  3. Push from the back foot and swing the arm forward to release the javelin toward the middle of the sector. Release when the arm is above shoulder height. Follow through with the arm pointing to the landing area.
  4. Practice short throws, then increase distance as skill and safety improve.
How to check a throw (simple assessment)
  • Did the javelin land inside the sector? (Yes / No)
  • Was the throw safe (no one in front, correct carry)?
  • Did the thrower use good grip and follow-through?
Class activity idea (15–20 minutes)
  1. Warm-up (5 min): light jog, arm swings, shoulder circles.
  2. Demonstration (3 min): teacher shows safe standing throw with foam javelin.
  3. Practice (10 min): learners practice 3–4 throws each, teacher watches safety and gives one tip per learner.
  4. Cool-down (2 min): gentle stretches and talk about safety and what was learned.
Note: Equipment sizes and exact sector marking rules can vary. Always follow your school’s Physical Education guidelines and the teacher’s instructions. If unsure, use foam/training javelins and keep the group small.
