Team A
NET 🤝
Midline (rope or net)
Team B
Note: For primary school keep smaller teams (3 v 3 or 4 v 4) and lower net height.
- Keep It Up — Players form a circle. Count how many consecutive passes without the ball touching ground. Use underhand pass (bump). Goal: beat previous score. Good for teamwork.
- Balloon Volleyball — Use a balloon across a low rope/net. Helps slow reactions and builds safe hitting.
- Passing Relay — Two teams, pass the ball along a line using underhand pass. First team back wins. Teaches control and movement.
- Target Serve — Place cones on opposite court. Players try to serve and hit cones. Rewards accuracy.
- Net Ball (mini game) — Small teams (3 v 3). Each team has 3 touches to return ball. Play to 11 points. Great introduction to full game rules.
- King/Queen of the Court — Winning side stays up, losing side rotates out; quick games with small teams. Encourages competition and fast play.
- Teams: Use small teams (3–6 players). For class play, 3 v 3 or 4 v 4 is best.
- Serving: Stand behind the end line. Serve the ball over the net with underhand or overhand. If serve hits the net but goes over, it is allowed (in beginner games).
- Touches: Each team can touch the ball up to 3 times before returning it over the net. A player cannot touch the ball twice in a row (no double hit).
- Types of touches: Pass (bump), Set, and Hit (spike or overhand hit). For beginners, focus on bump and underhand serve.
- Scoring: Use rally scoring (either team can score). For younger players play to 11 or 15 points per set. Best of 3 sets is good for a lesson.
- Ball in/out: If the ball lands on the line it is in. If it lands outside the boundary it is out.
- Net rules: Players should not touch the net. If a player touches the net and the contact affects play, the other team gets the point.
- Blocking: Beginners can block but teacher may count block as one of the three team touches to keep it simple.
- Rotation: For small teams you may skip rotating positions. In larger classes teach simple rotation when your team wins the serve.
- No carrying/catching: The ball must be hit cleanly. Do not hold or throw the ball.
- Always warm up: light jogs, arm circles, shoulder stretches. Helps prevent injuries.
- Remove jewelry and tie long hair. Wear school shoes or trainers to avoid slipping.
- Play on grass or marked court. Move stones and clear the area.
- Keep lessons short (10–20 minutes per game) and give water breaks, especially on hot days.
- Adapt equipment: use softer balls or balloons for beginners and smaller courts inside classrooms or under trees for shade.
- Emphasize fair play, taking turns and cheering classmates — important values in PHE.
- Set up net/rope and mark lines with cones.
- Warm-up (5–8 minutes).
- Play one or two minor games (Keep It Up, Balloon Volleyball).
- Teach 2–3 basic rules and demonstrate underhand serve and bump.
- Play short match (3 v 3) using simple scoring to 11.
- Cool down and discuss what was learned.
Enjoy playing and learning volleyball! 🏐🙋♀️🙋♂️
