Physical & Health Education — Handball

Subtopic: Ball Handling Activities (Age: 11 — Kenya)

Goal: Develop safe, accurate and confident ball handling (catching, throwing, passing and dribbling) for 11-year-old learners so they can play basic handball games. 🤾‍♂️🏫

Key Learning Outcomes

  • Catch a ball with two hands using correct hand position and body alignment.
  • Throw and pass the ball with basic accuracy over short distances.
  • Dribble (bounce) the ball while moving, using control.
  • Use simple feints and pivots to protect the ball.

Key Words

Catch, Pass, Throw, Dribble (Bounce), Pivot, Feint, Control, Accuracy

Equipment & Setup

  • 1 handball per pair or small group. For age 11 use size 0/1 (small school ball). If no handball, use soft round ball (not too heavy).
  • Cones or empty plastic bottles for markers (common in Kenyan schools).
  • Whistle or teacher voice, chalk or tape for lines if available.
  • Flat, non-slippery surface (school playground, grass or tarmac).

Safety Notes

  • Clear the area of stones, holes and obstacles.
  • Wear proper shoes (track shoes or closed shoes).
  • Keep a safe distance when throwing; use soft passes for beginners.
  • Teacher supervision during partner drills and games.

Lesson Structure (40–50 minutes)

  1. Warm-up: 8–10 minutes
  2. Main activities (drills): 25–30 minutes
  3. Small-sided game / fun competition: 7–8 minutes
  4. Cool-down & reflection: 3–5 minutes

Warm-up (8–10 min)

  • Light jog around the court x 2 laps — teacher counts or uses whistle. 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️
  • Dynamic stretches: arm circles, hip circles, knee lifts, gentle lunges (1 minute each).
  • Partner toss: stand 2 meters apart, gently toss and catch with two hands (20 passes).

Main Activities — Ball Handling Drills

1. Two-Hand Catch (Stationary)
Purpose: Teach correct hand shape and soft hands for safe catching.
Setup: Pairs, 2 m apart. Teacher demonstration first.
Steps:
  • Player faces partner, knees slightly bent, hands ready with thumbs behind and fingers spread.
  • Partner throws a soft chest pass; receiver absorbs ball by bringing it to chest (soft hands).
  • Repeat 10 times each, then move back 1 m to increase distance.
Coaching tips: Watch the receiver’s eyes on the ball, fingers spread, elbows slightly out. Use praise like "soft hands" and "watch the ball". Progress: throw from above or bounce pass.
2. Target Passing (Accuracy) 🎯
Purpose: Improve passing accuracy and aim.
Setup: Groups of 3 — two passers and one target; place cone/tube as target 5–8 m away.
Steps:
  • Passer A throws to target; passer B runs to spot and becomes next passer.
  • Count successful hits on the target in 1 minute. Swap roles.
Progression: Increase distance, use chest and bounce passes. Use local objects (bottle on a cone) as a visual target.
3. Dribble Relay 🔄
Purpose: Control the ball while moving (handball dribble).
Setup: Teams of 4; mark start and finish lines 15–20 m apart.
Steps:
  • Player dribbles to cone and back, hands below waist, eyes up, using palm and fingers to control bounce.
  • Next teammate goes when the previous returns. First team finished wins.
Coaching tips: Encourage low, controlled bounces; keep knees bent. Progress: add a defender (gentle) to teach protection of the ball.
4. Pivot & Pass (Shielding the Ball) ⤵️
Purpose: Learn to pivot on one foot and pass while protecting the ball.
Setup: Pairs; one holds ball, partner is passive defender (light pressure).
Steps:
  • Player with ball takes a step, plants pivot foot, turns (pivot) and passes to partner.
  • Practice both directions; change pivot foot to practice both sides.
Coaching tips: Keep pivot foot grounded, use body between defender and ball. Progress: add time limit to make a pass.

Fun Small-Sided Games (7–8 min)

  • Keep-Away (3 v 3): Keep ball for 10 passes to score a point. Encourages quick passing and movement.
  • King of the Court: Winners move up a court; losers down. Short matches (2–3 minutes).

Cool-down & Reflection (3–5 min)

  • Slow walk around the field, deep breathing.
  • Static stretches: calves, quads, shoulders (hold 10–15 sec each).
  • Class reflection: each child says one new thing learned today. Teacher notes progress.

Assessment / Simple Checklist (for teacher)

Use tick/cross during drills or quick 1–2 minute stations:

  • Catch: receives 8/10 passes cleanly ☐
  • Pass: accurate to target at short distance ☐
  • Dribble: controlled while moving 10–15 m ☐
  • Pivot: uses foot correctly and passes after pivot ☐

Teaching Tips (Kenyan school context)

  • Adapt equipment: use soft balls or taped socks if no handballs; bottles as cones.
  • Group learners by ability so faster learners can be challenged and beginners get support.
  • Use local games and songs to keep younger pupils engaged — combine skills with fun.
  • Encourage fair play, teamwork and respect — important values in PHE.
Quick Visual: Ball Handling Reminder
🤲 + 🎯 = 👍
"Soft hands, watch the ball, aim for the chest, keep moving."

Note: Keep lessons active and short for age 11. Repeat basic drills across several lessons to build confidence and skill.
