Subject: subject_replace — Topic: topic_name_replace — Subtopic: Handball

Target learners: age_replace (Kenyan context). These notes give practical, curriculum-friendly guidance for teaching the handball subtopic in school physical education and for learners preparing for inter-school play.

Learning objectives

  • Identify basic rules and scoring in handball as played in schools.
  • Demonstrate key skills: passing, catching, dribbling, shooting and basic defending.
  • Apply simple attacking and defensive tactics in small-sided games.
  • Show understanding of safety, warm-up and team roles (goalkeeper, wings, backcourt).

Quick facts (Kenyan school setting)

Handball is often played on school courts (netball/football courts adapted) or in halls. Where full-size courts (40m x 20m) are not available, use scaled-down courts and smaller teams (4v4 or 5v5).

School adaptations:

  • Use softer, size-appropriate balls (mini handballs) for younger learners.
  • Shorten playing time and reduce team size for age_replace to keep activity safe and engaging.
  • Encourage mixed-gender teams and focus on skill development over competition.

Basic rules (simplified for schools)

  • Teams: adapted sizes (4–7 players). One goalkeeper per team.
  • Objective: score by throwing ball into opponent's goal. Each goal = 1 point.
  • Players may take up to three steps without dribbling; may dribble but cannot run while holding the ball for more than three seconds.
  • No physical pushing or holding. Defenders use open-hand blocking and positioning.
  • Free throws from the spot of the foul; penalty throw from 7 metres for clear scoring opportunities denied by foul.

Key skills and how to teach them

Passing

Chest pass and bounce pass are core. Focus on accuracy, firm wrist action and follow-through.

  1. Stand shoulder-width, step towards target, snap wrist on release.
  2. Practice short quick passes in pairs, moving on the pass.

Catching

Use both hands, fingers spread, cushion the ball into the body. Teach soft hands and eye contact with the ball.

Dribbling

Use fingertips, keep ball waist-high. Practice controlled dribble with head up to encourage scanning the court.

Shooting

Step into the shot, use wrist snap, aim for corners of the goal. Encourage jump-shot basics for older students (age_replace+).

Defending

Use side-on stance, keep distance, block passing lanes. Teach zone and man-to-man basics through small-sided drills.

Sample lesson plan (40–50 minutes) — adaptable for age_replace

  1. Warm-up (8 min): light jog, dynamic stretches, passing in pairs.
  2. Skill drills (12–15 min): passing relay, dribble slalom, shooting at small goals.
  3. Small-sided practice (12 min): 4v4 with neutral player; focus on quick passes and shooting.
  4. Conditioned game (8–10 min): full-court adapted rules (no-contact, time-limited possessions).
  5. Cool-down & reflection (3–5 min): stretching and quick feedback from coach/teacher.

Safety & equipment

  • Ensure proper footwear (non-slip sports shoes) and clear playing area of hazards.
  • Use soft, age-appropriate balls. Inspect goals and fixings before play.
  • Teach falling and landing techniques to reduce injury risk.
  • Provide water breaks, watch for heat (Kenyan climates can be hot); schedule sessions earlier or later in the day.

Tactics & roles (simple)

Common roles: Goalkeeper, Left/Right Wing (fast, attack from flanks), Pivot (near opposition goal for screens), Backcourt (organize play and long throws).

Basic tactics: quick passing to create space, use pivot to occupy defenders, switch play from one side to another.

Assessment & progression

  • Formative: observe passing accuracy, correct catching, and basic decision-making in small games.
  • Summative: run a short adapted match and assess teamwork, rules knowledge, and safety awareness.
  • Progression: increase team size, court size, and introduce full rules and set plays for older learners (age_replace+).
