Christian Religious Education — Creation

Subtopic: Leisure (for age 11, Kenya)

Leisure is part of God's good Creation. It helps us rest, enjoy, and care for the world.
What is leisure?

Leisure means free time when we can rest, play, pray or enjoy nature. It is different from work. God gave people rest when He made the world.

Important ideas (short)
  • Leisure is a gift from God: it refreshes our bodies and minds. 🌞
  • Rest shows we trust God — we stop working and remember Him. 🙏
  • Play builds friendship and joy with others. ⚽🎶
  • Leisure can help us care for Creation — nature walks and gardening teach respect for God’s world. 🌳
  • Use free time in ways that are safe, kind and helpful. 🚫 means avoid harmful activities.
Examples of good leisure in Kenya
  • Playing football with friends after school. ⚽
  • Singing in the church choir or youth group. 🎵
  • Walking in a nearby park or visiting a creek with a grown-up. 🏞️
  • Helping plant trees or a vegetable garden. 🌱
  • Reading a story from the Bible or drawing pictures about Creation. 📖✏️
Leisure and Creation in the Bible

- Genesis 2:2–3 tells how God rested after He finished making the world. Rest is holy.
- Mark 6:31 says Jesus told the disciples to come away and rest a while. Jesus knew rest is important.

How to use leisure time well
  1. Rest: sleep well and take quiet time to pray or think. 😴
  2. Play: invite friends and include everyone. Be fair and kind. 🤝
  3. Learn: read, draw or practice music and talents God gave you. 🎨🎸
  4. Serve: help parents, clean your community or plant trees. This honours Creation. 🌿
  5. Protect yourself: avoid dangerous places, ask an adult before going out and say “no” to bad choices. 🚨
Short activities (class or home)
  • Nature walk: list 5 living things you see and thank God for each. 🐦🌼
  • Art from nature: make a picture using leaves, small stones and twigs. ✂️🍂
  • Memory verse: Learn one short verse about rest (e.g., Mark 6:31). Say it with friends. 🗣️
  • Service project: a small clean-up of the school compound or planting a tree. ♻️
Memory verse (simple):
"Then God rested on the seventh day." — Genesis 2:2–3 (simple paraphrase)
"Come away by yourselves to a quiet place and rest a little." — Mark 6:31 (paraphrase)
Rules for safe and respectful leisure
  • Always tell an adult where you will go. ✔️
  • Respect neighbours and nature — do not break plants or harm animals. 🌿
  • Include others; don't leave someone out. 🤗
  • Avoid harmful things (tobacco, alcohol, fights). These hurt your body and your walk with God. ❌
A short prayer for leisure

Dear God, thank You for the gift of rest and play. Help us use our free time to grow closer to You, care for Your world and love others. Amen.
