Attitude Towards Wealth

The Life of Jesus Christ — Christian Religious Education (Age 11, Kenya)

Learning objectives:
  • Understand what Jesus taught about money and possessions.
  • Know simple Bible stories that teach generosity and care for the poor.
  • Think about how to use money and things to help others in our community.

Key Bible stories (short)

1. The Rich Young Ruler (Mark 10:17–27)

A rich man asked Jesus how to get eternal life. Jesus told him to sell what he had and follow Him. The man went away sad because he had many possessions. Jesus taught that it is hard for rich people to put God first.

2. The Widow’s Offering (Mark 12:41–44)

A poor widow gave two small coins, all she had, while rich people gave more. Jesus said she gave more because she gave from her heart.

3. The Rich Man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19–31)

A rich man ignored a poor beggar called Lazarus. After they died, Lazarus was comforted and the rich man was not. The story teaches us to care for the poor now.

4. Treasure in Heaven (Matthew 6:19–21)

Jesus said we should store up treasures in heaven, not only on earth. This means use what we have to love God and help others.

What Jesus teaches us about money

  • Love God first, not money. (Money must not be your master.)
  • Be generous — share with the poor and those in need. 🙏🪙
  • Give with a happy heart, even if you have little (the widow’s gift). ❤️
  • Work honestly and use money to help family and community. 👩‍🌾👨‍🔧
  • Be careful about greed. Too much wanting leads away from God. ⚖️
  • Be a good steward — look after what you have and use it well for others.

Examples from Kenya (simple)

  • If you have a small business selling mandazi or miraa, give a little of your profit to help a sick neighbour.
  • Share part of your school lunch with a classmate who forgot theirs — that is generosity.
  • Use savings to buy school supplies for children in your village who cannot afford them.
  • Give time — help elders dig their shamba or fetch water; this is also serving like Jesus.

Activities & Questions

Class activity (10–15 minutes):
  1. Role-play: One child plays the rich man, another plays the poor person. Act out offering help and talking about what matters more — money or kindness.
  2. Drawing: Draw two pictures — one showing someone giving happily, and one showing someone only caring for money. Discuss which pleases Jesus.
Reflection questions (easy):
  • Why did Jesus praise the widow who gave two coins?
  • How can you help someone at school or in your village without money?
  • What does “treasure in heaven” mean for you?
Memory verse:

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” — Matthew 6:21

Short prayer:

Lord Jesus, help us to love you more than money. Teach us to share with those who need help. Give us kind hearts and wise hands to use what we have for others. Amen. 🙏

Takeaway (short):

Jesus wants us to use wealth to love God and help people. Being generous, honest and content makes us like Him.

Note: Encourage students to talk with parents or their church leaders about giving money. Always keep safety in mind when helping others.
