Grade 6 Christian Religious Education The Life Of Jesus Christ – The Call Of The Disciples Notes
The Life of Jesus Christ
Subtopic: The Call of the Disciples
Subject: Christian Religious Education • Target age: 11 years (Kenya)
Short story
Jesus walked by the Sea of Galilee and saw some men working. He called Simon Peter and Andrew while they were fishing. He also called James and John. He said to them, "Follow me." They left their nets and followed him right away. Jesus also called others like Matthew the tax collector. This shows how Jesus chose ordinary people to help him teach and serve.
Bible references: Matthew 4:18–22; Mark 1:16–20; Luke 5:1–11; John 1:35–51
Who were called?
- Simon Peter and Andrew – fishermen. They left their nets to follow Jesus.
- James and John – brothers and fishermen too.
- Matthew (Levi) – a tax collector who decided to follow Jesus.
- Others – many other men and women were later called to learn from Jesus and help him.
What happened and why it matters
- Jesus invited ordinary people to follow him.
- The disciples left their work and families to learn from Jesus.
- Jesus taught them to love, help others, pray and tell people about God.
- Their quick answer shows trust and obedience — good examples for us today.
Lessons for you (ages 11, Kenya)
- Obedience: When God or your parents teach you good things, listen and act. Just like the disciples.
- Courage: It is brave to change and follow what is right — even if it is hard.
- Service: Jesus chose people who would help others. You can help at home, school, or church.
- Trust: Trust Jesus. He cared for the people who followed him.
- Everyday jobs matter: Jesus used fishermen and workers. Where you live in Kenya — by the coast, at Lake Victoria, or in Nairobi — your skills are useful for God’s work.
Memory verse:
"Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." — Matthew 4:19
Short meaning: Jesus wants us to follow him and help others learn about God.
Class or home activities
- Role-play: One child is Jesus and calls others to follow. Talk about how the called children feel.
- Draw and label: Draw a boat, nets and the disciples. Write one thing each disciple might have left behind.
- Think and share: Name one thing you would be willing to leave (for a short time) to serve God or help your family.
- Memory challenge: Say Matthew 4:19 together as a class or at home.
- Home link: Help at home for one hour without being asked — then share what you did during worship or class next time.
Review questions
