The Bible as the Inspired Word of God

These notes are for Christian Religious Education (CRE). They help you understand what it means that the Bible is God's inspired Word. The language is simple for learners aged about 11 years in Kenya.

What "inspired" means

To say the Bible is inspired means God helped the people who wrote it so it tells us true things about God, people and how we should live. The writers used their own words, but God guided them.

Two main parts
  • Old Testament – before Jesus (history, laws, poems, prophets)
  • New Testament – about Jesus and early church (Gospels, letters)
Why it matters
  • Teaches us about God and Jesus.
  • Shows how to love others and live well.
  • Helps in prayers, worship and school CRE lessons.
How this fits in Kenya

In Kenya, people read the Bible at church, Sunday school, home and in CRE lessons at school. The Bible is in English, Kiswahili and many local languages. Many Kenyan families use the Bible for guidance during challenges and celebrations.

How to use the Bible
  1. Choose a book (e.g., John), find chapter and verse (e.g., John 3:16).
  2. Read slowly and think about what it means.
  3. Ask your teacher, parent or pastor if you have questions.
How to show respect
  • Keep the Bible clean and safe.
  • Listen when someone reads from it.
  • Pray before reading and try to follow its teachings.
Memory verse (easy to remember)
"Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light for my path." — Psalm 119:105
Short class activities
  • Find Psalm 119:105 in your Bible — name the book, chapter, verse.
  • Draw a small bookmark with the memory verse and decorate it with Kenyan colours.
  • Tell a friend one thing you learned from a Bible story this week.
Questions to answer in class
  1. What does it mean that the Bible is inspired?
  2. Name one story from the Old Testament and one from the New Testament.
  3. How can we use the Bible in our daily life at home or school?
Short prayer (you can say)

Dear God, thank you for your Word. Help us to read the Bible, understand your teaching and live as you ask. Amen.
