CRE Lesson: Honesty

Subject: Christian Religious Education (CRE) • Subtopic: Honesty • Age: 8 years (Kenya)
What is honesty?

Honesty means telling the truth and doing what is right. It means we do not lie, cheat or steal. Honesty makes God and people happy with us. 😊

Memory Verse
"The LORD detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are honest." — Proverbs 12:22 (simple words)
Why is honesty important?
  • God loves people who tell the truth.
  • Honesty builds trust with family, friends and teachers.
  • People will respect you when you are honest.
  • Honesty helps your community (school, church, market) to be safe and fair.
Everyday examples (Kenyan life)
  • At school: Do your own work and do not copy during tests.
  • At home: If you break a cup, tell your parent the truth and say sorry.
  • In the market: If a shopkeeper returns extra change, tell them and give it back.
  • At church: Be truthful when you share offerings or promises.
What happens when someone is not honest?
  • People stop trusting them.
  • They may get into trouble at school or at home.
  • It can make friends sad or angry.
How can you practice honesty?
  1. Always tell the truth, even when it is hard.
  2. If you make a mistake, say "I am sorry" and try to make it right.
  3. Return lost things you find, like a pencil or bag.
  4. Do not cheat in tests or games — play fair.
Fun activities
  • Role-play: In pairs, one child pretends to lose money in the market. The other must choose to return it and say why honesty is important.
  • Honesty jar: Draw a jar and write one honest action you will do this week on a paper slip. Put it in the jar each day you do it.
  • Colour and pledge: Colour a heart and write "I will be honest" on it. Put it on your wall or in your school book.
Quick True / False (ask aloud)
  1. It is okay to return extra change you receive by mistake. (True)
  2. It is honest to copy someone’s test and say it is your work. (False)
  3. If you break a teacher's cup, hiding it is better than telling. (False)
Short prayer

Dear God, help me to always tell the truth. Help me be brave when it is hard. Thank you for loving me. Amen. ✝️

Take-home pledge

I promise to be honest at home, at school and at church.
