Grade 3 CRE Christian Values – Responsibility Notes
CRE Notes — Christian Values
Subtopic: Responsibility (for age 8)
Context: Kenyan primary school — class activities and home life
Specific Learning Outcomes
- Explain in own words what "responsibility" means (simple definition).
- Give three examples of responsible actions at home, school and church (e.g., fetching water, keeping books, helping in Sunday school).
- Show one responsible action during class (help clean, return books, take care of school property).
- Recall a short Bible memory verse about doing work or serving with the right heart (Colossians 3:23 simple form).
- Talk about why Christians should be responsible (help others, honour God).
What is Responsibility?
Responsibility means doing the things you are supposed to do and taking care of what God and others have given you. It is doing your tasks well, keeping promises, and helping others without being told all the time.
Visual idea: ✅ Doing chores • 📚 Looking after books • 🤝 Helping a friend
Christian Teaching (Short & Simple)
The Bible teaches us to work with all our heart and to care for others. A short memory verse:
Colossians 3:23 (simple): "Do your work with all your heart, as if you are serving the Lord." 🕊️
Explain to children: When we do our work and help others, we are pleasing God.
Everyday Examples (Kenyan context)
- At home: Help fetch water carefully, sweep the compound, feed the chickens, or help pack food without breaking things. 🪣🏡
- At school: Keep your books tidy, carry your uniform well, line up quietly, return borrowed items. 📚🏫
- At church: Help clean the church yard, pass hymn books, assist younger children in Sunday school. ⛪✝️
- In the village/town: Do not litter, return lost items to the office or teacher, help a neighbour in need. 🌳🤝
Suggested Learning Experiences (Activities)
- Story time (10–15 min): Read or tell a short Kenyan story about a child who shows responsibility (example: helps mother milk cows or cares for a younger sibling). Ask simple questions: What did the child do? Was it right?
- Role play (15 min): In groups, act out two short scenes — one where a child is responsible and one where they are not. Class guesses which is which and explains why.
- Chore chart (ongoing): Create a colourful weekly chores chart in class. Each child has one small duty (water classroom plants, sweep, check books). Tick them when done. Use stickers for reward. ✅
- Drawing & caption (15–20 min): Draw a picture of yourself doing a responsible deed at home, school or church. Write one sentence below: "I am responsible because..." ✍️🎨
- Memory verse game (5–10 min): Practice Colossians 3:23 by repeating together, then say it in turns with actions (make a heart with hands when you say "heart").
- Group talk with parents (homework): Ask children to do one responsible thing at home and report next day (e.g., help set the table). Teacher praises effort in class.
How to Check Learning (Assessment)
- Ask the child to explain responsibility in one sentence and give an example.
- Observe class chores — does the child complete their task? (Use the chore chart stickers.)
- Check drawings and captions for understanding.
- Listen to the child recite the memory verse with understanding of its meaning.
Notes for Teachers & Parents
Encourage small, doable tasks. Give clear instructions and praise effort. Use local examples children know (village chores, school tasks). Make activities hands-on and short — 8-year-olds learn best by doing.
Quick reminder: Responsibility is small daily actions that show we love God and help others. Little acts matter — a kind heart and steady hands make a big difference. 🌟
